Its been a long while since I had to use any kind of phone directory service, I think the last time I did it was around £1 - £1.50 a pop. Yesterday we lost our Broadband, so we needed to call BT. We used 118118 and was put through (first mistake). The first call was cut off and the we got through to BT on the second attempt - Job done.

Then we get a call from BT today to warn us that the first call cost £50 and the second £62!!!! WTF!!

I've looked online and it appears that calling 118 118 is more expensive than calling a East European sex line!! What annoys me is that the costs were never explained, clearly if they were you would tell them to fk off.

Has anyone been scammed by these fkers before as I'm not one to take this BS lying down. I can't believe there is nothing I can do to these s. I've had a look online and appears this has been going on for some time.

Any help appreciated. Going to call them tomorrow.....

That can't take be right surely?

I'm surprised these types of services still operate tbh. Surely even if your broadband went down you still had 3G?

Had used all my data and reception round here is bad at the best of times. Don't mind a couple of pounds for the call (which I consider reasonable) but anything more than a fiver is criminal. £50+ is fking extortion.

That's bad. Lesson to us all, call a friend and get them to look up the number and buy them a bottle of wine as thanks.

I knew they were expensive but didn't realise how much. I need to check these are blocked at work now!

Thought this was was of those BS stories. Was I wrong! Seems to be a minimum charge of £7.00. They don't put that in the adverts. Feel for you OP

What Does it Cost to Use 118 118?
Calls to 118 118 cost £3.49 per call plus £3.49 per minute, (minimum 60 second charge applies). In addition you will be charged an access charge per minute by the company that bills you for calls.

Not really. It's £50 punishment for putting yourself in such a retarded position that you had to call them.

How the fk can this be legal. I could understand it if they tell you the charge and you accept. However without surely its more of a con.

So this is how they keep those awful adverts going with the two moustache guys that I could happily shoot.

Only kidding, though I really do hate them

Can't offer any advice in your case but glad you posted this - exactly the sort of outfit I should be telling my folks to steer well clear of.

There;s a plethora of options you could have used before calling 118

Calling a mate for example, or even texting them.

This is why I always ask them to give me the number so I can write it down. if they say they'll text me it for free then I'm fine with that aswell.

Though in the years that 118 118 has been a thing I have only ever maybe used directory enquiries 1-2 times. We have the internet and gooogle for anything and everything.

The reason I originally bough a smart phone was because of the complete incompetence of these types of services.

The last time I had call to ring one was to try and contact a vet. I gave them the name of the surgery and the village it was located in - could they find a number....hell no......."the number doesn't exist on our records".

I got home and it took me around 5 seconds to find the number using Google.

I went out and bought a smart phone the week after....just so I could have google on tap.
