Last week the DVLA van was in my area clamping vehicles (there is one almost opposite my house on side of road) the car opposite has only been parked there for 5 days and was clamped on Friday, it is showing as not having been taxed or MOT'd since July 2016 and is also showing as uninsured. Is it down to the DVLA or the police to remove it? Myself and neighbours don't really want it sitting there for weeks on end as it already has a smashed side window!

I'd have thought it's the owners job to move it. Where do you expect the police or DVLA to take it?

If it's damaged (side window smashed) then maybe contact the council through concern that something else may happen to it causing problems.

Seen similar around where I used to live and was a regular occurrence seeing camera vans pootle around looking for customers. Dvla would clamp and then a few days later they would be lifted by a contractor ( had something like 'working with the dvla' on the side) and I guess they were taken to the council pound.

If it's been DVLA clamped then it'll be off to the pound soon enough. They'll want the clamp back if nothing else wink

DVLA will remove it. Down here it gets taken to the local recovery garage they have a contract with, before going to Bristol.

There's been a clamped Corsa just along the road from us since around Christmas. We assumed it was a security device put on by the owner, perhaps before going on holiday, maybe we were wrong.

Watched a guy down my work remove one on his car. Left at the side of the road. What will happen to him now?

And no its not me, I quit enjoyed watching him remove it though.

They'll be in contact and potentially charge him for the damage caused (providing the car is registered to him) it'll also probably be placed on an ANPR list too.

On route to and from inlaws I kept passing a clamped car in Maidstone. Initially clamp was covered by a blanket or rug but that vanished. I first thought it was DVLA, then thought it was the owner as security device but car never moved. More recently the clamp has gone and car is still there but moves. I have concluded it was fitted by a bailiff who effectively took possession of the car pending payment of some debts and removed once paid.

There was a Citroen Picasso near me which had been wearing a clamp for well over a year, it only recently disappeared. The clamp had faded to an almost white colour it was there so long!

There's one by me that hasn't moved in about 4 months. It' an older Volvo and has been clamped twice in that time.

Clamp goes on as well as 'Untaxed Vehicle' sticker on the window. Then a few days later the clamp would be gone but the sticker would still be there. Then about a month later the clamp would be back, again a few days later the clamp would be gone. I guess the owner is seeing the clamp and then taxing the car prompting the DVLA to remove the clamp.

I'll have to get the reg number tomorrow and check if it's taxed or not. It's annoying as it's parked in a 3 car parking bay but in a weird spot so there's a huge gap on one side of it and a smaller gap on the other.

There was an older Citroen parked further down the street that was dumped by the owners - they live in my block of flats and now have a beat up old Astra. They left it in a parking bay for about 8 months. Eventually the council took it away.

DVLA seem to be quite hot on tax in my area though. Quite often driving through middle class suburbia to get home and see lots of clamped cars. Lots of new Audis and typical cheap lease cars all clamped with huge stickers on.

A DVLA clamp ?

A fine of upto £500 for removing the immobilisation notice and upto £1,000 for removing (or attempting to remove) the clamp.

Any damage to the clamp itself would be an additional matter.

What we really need is a little circle of paper with an expiry date on it and place it in the corner of the windscreen. Then we would be able tell immediately if the car was taxed...

It would never catch on though.

I think that it's the most feeble excuse ever to blame not having a tax disc for cars being untaxed.

You get a reminder, you can set up direct debit, you can diarise it on your phone

I had one clamped.

Massive LWB van.

I parked another LWB van behind it, chained the axles together and put a car in front.

Two weeks later they came and unclamped one morning, attended another clamped car as a big truck came up the road.

I just quickly unchained it and drove off.

A neighbour said they had already come in one truck but couldn't lift the thing.

Never heard a thing. Van wasn't registered to me at the time though and I had no idea it had been declared SORN.

Previous owner just declared it scrapped.

So when you drove off you knew you were driving an untaxed and therefore illegal vehicle, it was probably also uninsured as a result of being untaxed. If it was your responsibility I any way, why didn't you check the tax status? If it wasn't your responsibility why bother to try and prevent it being towed?

Pretty poor form IMO. We don't need people who knowingly drive untaxed vehicles

On its own, an absence of VED wouldn't invalidate an insurance policy.
