Revelation in the gym today - proper coaching
Discussion
As some background I am what I consider to be a pretty fit bloke - gym 5 times a week (usually 2 cardio/3 weights) and some rugby on a Sunday morning.
Am a happily married 40yr old with three kids so my motivation has always been to keep fit and make sure I am fit/healthy/strong when I am 45/50+ so I can keep up with my kids and not be one of the unfit/fat dads that can't play a game of footie with their kids.
My gym sessions are usually short due to work so I am no bodybuilder type but I generally know what I am doing and would put myself at the strong/muscular end of the range.
Yesterday though got talking to a new trainer at my gym in the locker room who is a professional world class powerlifter (huge guy) - I prefer to lift heavy rather than tons of reps so he volunteered to give me a workout today. All I can say is f@&k me...!! Never have I been so tired walking out of a gym after a 1hr session. I literally was holding the handrail walking down the stairs...
Spent the first 20mins after warm up working on purely technique - videos, playbacks with lots of critique, etc. With some very interesting tweaking, drills, exercises and good explanation the guy improved my squat technique in 40mins to the point I immediately hit a PB with definitely more to come.
I have generally stayed away from personal trainers etc as most of them seem to focus on BS training sessions with the aim of fleecing as much cash from you and teaching the latest fad. After years of working out I was amazed at what this guy achieved in one session.
Even for those guys (like me) who consider themselves experienced it really shows that some coaching by a real expert in their field can do. Highly recommend it.
Am now signed up for some more sessions and focused on real core strength, power and lifting gains - should be interesting.
