Asking advice for a friend.

My buddy has just bought an absolutely mint condition 5000 mile 2003 SL55 AMG, with a few small niggles.

1. TPMS Sensors, can these be de-coded? The sensors if bought from the dealer are insanely expansive, so the smart move would be to just de-code it. I'm sure however that there are replacement parts to be had.

2. It has a very small stone chip in the distronic grille, bang smack in the middle of the Mercedes star, and the dealer quoted a simply ridiculous amount of money to replace it. The dealer claimed that just that part can not be changed and one has to replace the entire distronic unit at a cost of almost £4000. That seems somewhat steep.

Any takers?

Wow....5,000 mile. I am in the market for one and I didn't see that one being advertised.

I can't help on the first issue however on the second one the only advise I can give is to get a replacement part from a breakers. There are 2-3 breakers advertising Sl55 parts on eBay alone.

You can code TPMS out using STAR. I had this done recently on my 55.

It was advertised briefly, car is in Sweden however biggrin Car is sensational, looks brand new inside and out. And well taken care of, never driven in the winter and by the looks of it hardly in bad weather either, underside is spotless aswell. It was just serviced with new tyres all around etc before sale, total invoice for the last service was £5000... So it will not be a cheap ride for my buddy Rob, thats for sure, but thats his problem biggrin

On the second subject I've done some digging and it turns out that there is indeed replacement parts for just the grille, so no need for the entire unit to be replaced.

Jas Xjr, and Chris, thanks alot aswell.
