More seriously, the root causes of this were discussed very eloquently in Bowling for Columbine...and no-one learned a damned thing, because it goes to the very heart of US society, and the means of social control the government employs (in fact, probably the only reason the Republicans keep getting elected).
Unfortunately, that means - fear of strangers - has been successfully imported over here - how many times do you now hear anti-arab or anti-black propaganda from the state or in the press, and how often do you hear "terrorists" used as a justification for raping our civil rights???
I feel for those families...but I also feel for the kid who was pushed into such a corner by the society he lived in that he needed to do that. The worst of it is that such a demonstation of anger, such an attempt to refute his own feelings of impotence (as in the original meaning, not sex!), is now becoming commonplace in the USA and will go little-heeded outside the immediate community.
