Your probabaly right Mike, extreme heat would surely effect its lifespan. I know there not cheap, i had a quote for my S in a two tone green/blue & they came up with around £900, also required the hood completely removed aswell as all rubber trim etc for a proper job.
Had a quick browse on the net & found this..
"A well cared for vinyl wrap can last for up to 7 years. (We've seen some last longer, but these were mostly show cars that didn't see much time outside.) We usually give a lifespan of 5-7 years for our color change films (3M, Avery, etc…) and 5 years for our digitally printed wraps."

You need to know about the joins, the Griff owner had an issue with that, may not be an issue on an "S".
I always wonder what the inside of the doors and bodywork would look like such as under the windscreen when the bonnet is open etc?
A wrap may look alright to a passer by but an owner who sees all of the car may think differently?

I am testing for wrapping wheels....

Or you could just add stripes!
All very cost effective

On my latest purchase of my other classic car interest/hobby, namely Panthers. That car had stood for 22years including suffering a canvas garage collapse onto it. So the metallic gold paintwork was completely shot, cracked, crazed, peeling, blistered. You name it, its got it. So once I had completed the mechanical resto, I just wanted to use it !
Anyway, in short I thought I would give 'wrapping' a go.
I bought 50 Quid's worth of cheap Chinese eBay Black vinyl, got out my hot air gun & Stanley knife. Plus a pair of white tight fitting cotton gloves (they're a God send).
From a distance it don't look so bad, well, better than it did do. Its lasted 2 years so far, but this spring its getting a proper full respray in a new colour.
As far as fitting the vinyl, I found it much harder than seen on those YouTube videos, plus for big areas you will need x2 persons. On my car, repositioning the vinyl just pulled the crap gold paint off, which was then stuck to the vinyl & required a new piece to be fitted.
But like I say than was on my crap car.
You decide whether it looked okay.

I'm the Griff owner...My main problem is, the Griff is a one piece body, with no joins. The earlier TVR'S may fare a little better
I went a little 'bling' because the Griff will go back to its Moonraker Black in a year or so...I had setbacks with a couple of painter friends, and got fed up of waiting...

I will be wrapping my Chimaera in March.
I have previously had it Plastidipped, because I simply did not have the funds for a full respray.
I was one of the unlucky ones with Plastidip - there was an issue with the chemistry, and the car lives outside, and the Plastidip has discoloured.
The guy who did it offered me a discount on a respray to a different colour, but:
1. Plastidip dissolves if you get petrol on it.
2. It is matt in finish unless you go for a special gloss additive, which makes the stuff harder to peel off later.
3. I am not impressed with the durability.
I still don't have the funds for a full respray and colour change, and am still using the car a lot and in all conditions, so am looking at wrapping the car instead of painting it. I don't want to find myself not wanting to take the car out because it might get stone chipped. That's not why i have it, and a fellow Chim owner who did have a full respray warned me I would feel like that. I do track days and so on (the one place you DON'T get stone chips), and use the car to go for country drives, shopping, touring and so on.
The only wrap I have seen so far has stayed on the car extremely well, and served its purpose:

I am also a fan of bright or even metallic films, which i think wrapping does very well

When the car has been done I will post a detailed report for you to see what you think. Paint of course is the ultimate finish, but wrapping has its place I think as a short term solution

Out of interest what is a rough figure for having an S wrapped?
I know that may depend on which wrap you go for, but any ideas?
Greenhulk said he was quoted £900I know that may depend on which wrap you go for, but any ideas?

Presume the £900 didn't include prep like removing/refitting hood, rubber trims etc?
Yeah think your right there mike, was just a rough estimate but i bet it would of jumped up due to them not knowing there way around a TVR.. Thats the impression i got anyway & probably end up damaging something along the way.For anyone feeling brave on using a vinyl wrap on the 'S'
this was the place i got quoted from www.alpha-customs.co.uk/vehicle-vinyl-wrappingGassing Station | S Series | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
