Driving standing up conviction for tall Newcastle man

Shouldn't really judge, but, his past record of 12 previous convictions for driving while disqualified says a lot!!

yeah but he was only convicted of this one because he was told to admit it
If he'd gone through mags and onto a jury would they have been convinced he was standing up or that it was dangerous?

I don't really have anything to add to this, other than that picturing it made me chuckle heartily! Especially Mr Elliot's comment that:"I think the case shows it's a bad idea for really tall people to drive really small cars."

The Telegraph write-up does explain that the chap in question has 12 previous offences for driving whilst disqualified. I am not a lawyer, so I don't know if that would be disclosable/admissable in court, but it might go some way to explaining why he was advised to plead guilty.

Still seems harsh though, given that he seems to have sorted out his behaviour and got a business. There's loads of distracting behaviour on the road that doesn't get prosecuted.

Can't see how that's any more dangerous than driving a kit car with an aeroscreen, which I've done on lots of occasions albeit sometimes with a helmet for added eye-safety, but often just with sunglasses.

Its dangerous in the same way driving without a seatbelt is dangerous (if he was standing) - the setabelt wouldn't function correctly if he was standing (assuming he could even wear it).
My stepson is taller than that guy (at 6'10" - and yes he did play basketball) and has no issue driving sitting down....

The way I read it, it wasnt the fact that his head was above the screen but that he was 'showing off' and distracting other drivers.

6'6" isnt that tall and looking at the picture shown on various news sites he is clearly bracing himself to give extra height.

I suspect that he was/is a pillock
Throw in the 12 cases driving while disqualified (and why was he disqualified in the first place?) and I'm lacking any sympathy.

Yeah, I thought that about the picture too, clearly bumping himself up a bit. I suspect they wagered that if forced to be put to proof (IE demonstrating in the car) then they'd lose.... Hence the guilty plea.

DWD 12 times before? Jeez, that paints a picture. I wouldn't be surprised at a suspended custodial since he clearly doesn't listen to Courts!

Calling the judge a "stupid cow" was also a poor tactical move...

Those BBC pics, the second one shows the roll bar level with his ear and the first pic he is miles above it. Clearly he could have sat lower and not made it an issue on the road.
Can someone please post a heads up when he is sentenced. biggrin

It mentioned on the radio interview, yesterday, that he dealt in cars. Yet in his next sentence, he suggested that he didn't appreciate how small the, (fiesta ?) was, and him being such an abnormal height !!!!! Bo**ocks, just got caught being a numpty, as his previous driving record would suggest.

Likely more to the story than we're being told. I do wonder what the evidence was & why he actually changed his plea.
In the photos shown in the media although he appears to be stretching as much as possible I would suggest it would make a NG result very possible so 'Plead guilty to get it over with' doesn't cut it.
IF the evidence that the Prosecution were going to show was a video showing what happened then I can see his legal advisor telling him he was stuffed & a Guilty plea would be likely to get a reduction in penalty.
As it's a Guilty plea we may never know.

He gave an interview on local radio yesterday. He says he wasn't standing up (it just looked that way as he is tall) but he pleaded guilty on advice of his legal team. He said that he admits he was waving at other motorists who were flashing and waving. He said something along the lines of he was being polite and waving back but accepts that it was considered distracting.

Basically, it sounded like he was being a prat which he admits and has accepted some punishment but he claims not to be guilty of standing up. No mention was made about previous form. It's all a bit of a none story to me. Local guy is really tall and was driving a small car and milking up the attention.

I meant as shown in the images in the link, not actually standing on the seat hehe
