Battery, Radio fault?

Recently on an extremely cold morning, the battery died on my wife's Fiat Croma, I jump started it and she drove from London to Canterbury that day, about 65 miles.
On her return, about a mile from home, the radio, which she'd not had on all day, suddenly came on, she turned it off, but 300 metres later it came on again, she turned it off again.
Normally when you switch the engine off, if the radio had been on, it would go off as you turned the key, I'm now wondering did the radio come on without us knowing, and drain the battery?
My wife searched the Internet for an answer, and someone replied, "Insert a CD in the radio, this prevents it coming on inadvertently", I was doubtful, but I tried it, and her car has been okay since.
I asked a Fiat dealer's service department about it, they said that they'd never heard of it happening before, anyone got any ideas?
