Nothing fancy. Just the normal Haggis, Neeps and tatties in a whisky cream sauce.

No sauce here (other than gravy) though my O/H, from Aberdeen, doesn't like haggis so she'll be having chicken.

Bangers n' mash with onion gravy and a pint of Spitfire is the way to go.

I'm not a Scot but I do like trying different foods so I bought one in Sainsburys yesterday as it was discounted. There were some interesting ways of cooking it shown on Sunday Brunch and I quite liked the Haggis, Mac and Cheese recipe but pan fried with a whisky cream sauce sounds too good not to do as well.

Same here minus the sauce.

Shame it's a supermarket job, hard to find anywhere else in SW England!

If you ever want to try a Highland butchers Haggis I could send you a chilled one.

The same, only layered like a lasagne with cheese on top.

oh and the haggis is a vegetarian version from our local butcher.

That would be brilliant - I'm Scottish but stuck in England for work and miss proper butchers haggis amongst other things!

I had one on Monday evening - MacSween's. Enjoyed it.

Sadly, my wife is allergic to some forms of oats, so it's not something I regularly get to enjoy.

I'm sure you're not stuck here, Sturgeon is always saying how well you'll do on your own. rofl Must be so many jobs in Scotland.

Whatever that was, haggis it definitely wasn't.

What sort of vegetarian wants to eat a substitute for sheep stomach, heart and lungs anyway?

The local butcher in question is twice world champion haggis maker (for his 'normal' haggis). He sells about 1 veggie for every 4 'normal' haggis and they are sent all over the world. He reckons that as many of the veggie ones are bought and eaten by 'normal' people as veggies as a matter of taste rather than conscience. I don't agree that the veggie option isn't a real haggis, traditionally haggis was a mix of whatever scraps people had, chopped up and bulked out with oatmeal and only relatively recently was more narrowly defined. The word 'haggis' is believed to have been a corruption of the French word 'Hatche' or chopped.

We've been reading different histories then.

Haggis is unloved bits of sheep in a bag. Delicious, but I wouldn't touch a fake one with a ten foot pole.

Exactly, haggis was a way of using up the remains of the animal so that nothing was wasted. I doubt we had a surplus of lentils, nuts, seeds and pips lying around wink

I wish people would stop referring to it as sheep's stomach, like that's what you're eating. Personally, I find that idea disgusting. Like tripe, for example. hurl

I did a lasagne. 500g beef mince and half a haggis (about 250g), red pepper, yellow pepper, onion, mushrooms, courgette, Dolmio lasagne kit (red sauce, white sauce, pasta sheets) that had a free lasagne dish, tinned tomatoes, cottage cheese (dollops between the layers like what Simon Rimmer does hehe ). Had way too much veg for the amount of meat and the size of the dish so bagged and frozen half of that, I'll use it at the weekend with the other half of the haggis. Lasagne is good though smile .
