Had my 450 Chimp for a couple of weeks now. It has started making a god awful noise when turning the steering wheel when first started. This seems to get better when the car has warmed up, but still makes a noise when turning the wheel at low revs. It is under dealer warranty. Has any one else had similar trouble? Is my PAS about to go pop?

Chcek that you've got PAS fluid in the reservoir? If not top it up. It is possible that there is a leak. Look for signs of red liguid on the garage floor.

Not sure about the newer 450's, but my older 400 (94) with PAS does hiss and weeze a little anyway. Almost all power steering (except the newer electric motor ones - like the ones fitted to the new 7'series for example) do make some noise.

Not saying that it is nothing to worry about, but could you be worrying about a noise that it should be making. Oh, and as Steve points out - check the PAS resevoir and see if it has plenty of fluid. Dont overfill, but unless you are getting real granching noises then the chances that the PAS is find. The older ones are converted Ford racks I believe and are fairly reliable. If if does go pop then a recondition of it is only in the £200 - £300 mark so not too bad...

Cheers,

Paul

Myth put about by Henry Ford III to incresae sales of Escort racks and to allow Escort Cossies to claim some TVR heritage. The housing look similar but that is it.

Steve,

Do you know if the rack is off another car ?? Mine needed the bit from the rack to the track rod end, and I had to pay a TVR breaker £100 for it !! Either that or £800 for a new rack

Any info greatly appreciated

Yep it was also fitted to a TVR Griffith...

The racks are TVR specials and have been since the S series. Many of the specialists can recon them depending on what the damage is - if it is seals then this is usually no problem. Bits of metal can be though as you have found out.

Took it back to dealer. Leak in the power steering system (one of the hoses has a small split). Also mentioned that idling was a bit slow when cold, so they are going to change stepper motor as well.
