After a garage clear out I have found an old black and silver pressed registration plate MYG393D. Some googling suggests it was originally on a Rochdale, but it's no longer showing on the DVLC. If the car still exists and the owner would like it back please get in touch. It's a bit shot at as you can see, but it belongs with the car and not on my garage wall.

Yes it is, but you need to know EXACTLY what make it was registered as.
I this case it's a ROCHDALEOLYMPIC (one word).

Registration number: MYG 393D
Untaxed
Tax due: 01 April 2007
MOT: No details held by DVLA
Vehicle details
Vehicle make: ROCHDALEOLYMPIC
Date of first registration: September 1966
Year of manufacture: 1966
Cylinder capacity: 1380 cc
Export marker: No
Vehicle status: Not taxed
Vehicle colour: GREEN

It seems to have been exported to France at some stage, but the DVLA have no record of this.

Thanks Roy. I wouldn't have thought of it all as one word.

Found a picture of it on the Owners Club site. Eleven cars down:

The trick is to use this website first to establish the make (and bypass the mistakes on the DVLA database): https://www.cartell.ie/

I remember buying a box of vinyl records from a guy in Berkshire about 10 years ago, and we got talking old cars - his garage wall had loads of old genuine ropey looking reg plates hung up.
You'd be absolutely surprised what some people collect - and will part with money for! - what most think is junk). I know. biggrin

I'd have that up on ebay tonight, covering my costs with p/p, start at 99p and see what happens!

Having just had a dekko on the bay, perhaps 99p is too low! If you do put it on, don't forget to add it is for collectible purposes or display (not on a vehicle!) only.

Stick it on your garage wall as a memento. I've got a few up there now.

Hi Rick,

This Olympic is now in Germany and on German plates.
I do not think the owner would require the plate so please destroy it.

Tony Stanton. Rochdale Olympic History Archive.
That's a bit harsh considering you don't own the plate or the car, who are you to dicate what he does with it?.

I didn't say it, but I did think that myself. Hence why I told the op to list it on ebay. Whatever, don't bin it. In fact, why was it in his garage? Did a previous owner of the Rochdale live there? It's part history of that garage!!

Thanks for all the replies. I can assure you it's back on the wall and certainly won't be destroyed. I'm pleased to hear the car still exists and if the owner of the car wants it, I will happily post it to wherever he is.

A good twenty years ago a friend of mine was rebuilding his garage and found the plate. He gave it to me as he knows I'm a sucker for old stuff. Since then it's been in my garage. A recent tidy out unearthed it and here we are!

A pre crossflow, 5 bearing Ford 1297cc bored to 83,5mm. Common enough to do back in the day.

How do you know the owner in Germany wouldn't want to have the plate as it is a part of the cars history?

Perhaps they might like to display their pride a joy at a German car show with the original British plate fitted?

And even if the new owner didn't want the plate, why should the OP destroy it? confused

There's no issue with being in possession of an old registration plate.

We all like a happy ending don't we?

I had a lovely email from Tony, apologising that he had got the wrong end of the stick with his initial post. He managed to get hold of the current owner who is clearly a very lucky chap as can be seen from his website below. I've had a lengthy email exchange with him and he seems a great guy so I'm very pleased it's all worked out. The number plate is on it's way to him. It belongs to the grey car:
