original 1990 390 FHC
Discussion
This lovely car sold yesterday: http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auct... Does it belong to a PHer? Looks like a 350 SE with an early body. I wonder which chassis?
Thats way too cheap for a one off....Only one built..390SE FHC must be over 10K???...Looks in really nice fettle too...
I don't understand it....People were looking to buy two piles of not what they should be on here recently and when a rare genuine one off comes along in the condition it states and is under the price of what the others were trying to relieve someone of no ones moves on it?????....
I would have this over those two 450SE that have been annoyingly hovering about lately!!
Just my 2p worth....

I REALLY like it...l...The space between the right hand side of the drivers seat looks wider so maybe more elbow room...Cant quite see the tops of the arm rests...
It should have bigger half shafts and brakes..Probably square outriggers?..
Best of all its a hot-wire which means its a good candidate for tuning..More power with the right software..
Yes the flapper pops and bangs...But trust me so does a hot-wire car...Ask the Gredge...

I like the rarity of this car and the fact that it's a FHC and a 390, but, it lacks originality in that it's had a colour change and needs work to bring up to an excellent standard. I've been looking for a FHC for a while now but very few immaculate ones on offer.
A one off is always tempting. Agree that some details would annoy me too: driver's footwell carpet and gear level for starters. It's odd that it has a series one rear bumper but a series two front bumper. I suppose that the Renault lights won't fit with the rear vertical window.mrzigazaga said:

Yes, it does look like a nice car but if you had bought it at the hammer price £8K then add a service and fettle some bit's like carpets (and tyres?) it could soon be a £10K outlay and much as I like FHCs I don't think that they'll reach the value of the DHCs. I agree that with similar age Porsche's reaching £40K you'd think that TVRs would command a higher price. There again there's a lot of cars that I think have odd values (low and high)

Yes and that's £8K with buyer's premium. I would have thought that was about the going rate.
ACA charge 5% + VAT (so 6% really) so it would have been £7632. They also wanted all cars gone by Tuesday whereas they normally give you 2 weeks storage free according to their T&C.
Some bids were definitely being taken 'off the wall' to try and get them started.I didn't have a close look at it, I have a Chimaera and was looking at other stuff. I did notice the bonnet seemed a poor fit, it was sitting proud below the windscreen.
Some stuff went for way over what you could buy at dealers and get a warranty on (2 x M3 BMWs for example)!
It was VERY busy, too busy really considering it's January. They kept advising there were too many people in the way; well, count the people in then and have a limit. At £5 for a catalogue and entry, they make a lot on the day.
Wouldn't go there again on auction day, chaos trying to register to bid, I gave up, and very, very long queues for food and the toilets I noticed. View on the day before and bid online or by phone, perhaps.
I don't get it. What's 2 grand more or less if such a rare opportunity comes up and you are on the hunt for one?
Don't get me wrong I do have to work hard for my money but one can always save/make some money somewhere else.
Waiting until the next opportunity comes up in maybe two years just to save a grand or two - I don't know.
I paid more for my 350i FHC and would not even think of selling her for this kind of money (she is certainly not for sale).
I would never have the opportunity again to get something comparable again. Happy wedging!

They don't do online bidding but you can do commission bids or telephone bidding. If you want to break all the buying at auction rules, you don't even have to go to see the car but get there appraiser to give you a walk around description of the car and then bid.
Some fool I know did this when bidding on the Rover P4 there, but I ...err I mean he, possibly luckily was £500 short on his commission bid, not good for the nerves though.
Of course if the owner accepted the highest bid after the auction then the car will still have sold.
Regards
Nick

What you're saying is a fair point and makes sense to grab something like this when the oportunity arises but originality is paramount amongst most classic enthusiasts and to return this car to its original state with the colour change and everything else would cost a fortune on top of the winning bid. Just the way I see it.Don't get me wrong I do have to work hard for my money but one can always save/make some money somewhere else.

Hi
I have been following this car for a number of years.
It was original yellow with a red interior. The Engine is an early Chim one.
When they painted the exterior they also painted all the engine compartment blue apart from the engine,

The interior has been partly redone.

Yes it's rare car and from what I could see last summer in basicaliy good condition but it needs a full interior (You may get away with the roof lining.) the seats look ok but some of the rest has been re-die black.
Some may like the engine compartment all blue but it's not a pretty sight.
All the decals are made up.
So the £7.2K bid is a bit high, but that's my opinion when you consider it needs an interior and some paint work.

I was amazed how busy it was when i bought my S3c. Straight after Christmas and loadsa money in the room. Did the room fill with choking fumes?

I have to agree with Fullpull these cars are far rarer than most of the dhc models and although not to every ones taste are now starting to be sought after there is always someone on the forum'saying how much they would like one but wanting it cheep.I have lateley thought about selling mine since my Knee opp but would not dream of selling it for these kind of prices.
The results are on the website now and it didn't sell.
It cost £90 to put the car through the auction. The seller would have had to pay £432 in commission if the provisional bid had been accepted, leaving £6768. With a fresh MoT in March, which may or may not be expensive of course (!), it should fetch more.

Yes, it's a funny old world when an MG RV8 fetches £17K but a TVR cannot achieve half of that price or even sell.It cost £90 to put the car through the auction. Andy, is this car essentially a re-bodied 350SE?
