Mrs B has expressed an interest in learning where she came from. Not so much the immediate family but more where the ancient ancestors came from. I gather this sort of info can be had nowadays but I'm not sure where from, and more particularly whether it's something I can do as a surprise for her birthday. The standard genealogy thing may be easier from that point of view and I'm sure she'd be interested in that too.

Have any PHers any experience of either? Anywhere that can be recommended?

I think these sites only give you roots by country or even area and this may be exactly what you are looking for.

If you are looking for information or research into her family history, a family tree and similar to what you might have seen on Who Do You Think You Are then some family research will be needed. You might want to have a look at Family Tree Forum. There are people who will do this research for you and tell you where people lived and what they did for a living.

I did my own last year and found some surprises, loads of siblings of my fathers that I didnt know about.

It is fairly easy to get back to 1800 or so especially, because people tended to stay in one house and marriage was strong, and a census every 10 years, last available records is 1911.

I've used accu-metrics, slightly different as it was for dog DNA but they also do First Nation testing to help find your genealogy.
Found them okay although results took a bit longer than the advertised week, once I chased them up they sorted it quickly

I thought these were too general to really be of much use.
Much better to trace the ancestry through records and dig up those family secrets that were never spoken of

This is what we recently did for three generations of our family for a Christmas present for my mum, who has done a lot of work on the family history

That's interesting, I wonder if anyone does this in the UK?

I am in the UK, took about six weeks altogether - easy process, and art of a wider project

Fair enough, I can only go by my experience which was okay, I notice that their non dog breed tests are more expensive so this may have put me off
Good luck
