Going through a bit of a tough time and keep thinking maybe I just need to get away for a bit - not rehab, but away from my usual 'group'. Has anyone got any experience of the various places you can go - I was looking at a place in Turkey, but any suggestions would be welcome.

I did this recently, not a 'detox' place, just got a cottage in the New Forest for me and the dog. No internet, no phone signal, no wife, no kids, just loads of walks and beautiful scenery.

It was great to clear the mind and get away from work and the temptations of London for a week.

If you want a 'proper' detox, then I'd recommend the Mayr Clinic in Austria

Not for everyone though.

Sofia in Bulgaria is nice place, has natural springs and a few hotels built on them. mountains all around for walks and biking and clean air outside city.

some great places in Phuket. Wife did one and loved it, I went for the weekend, was excellent (lots of sport, massage, chill out), apart from her not telling me it was a vegan retreat! ;-)

Canary islands or Madeira? I'm sure there are places there that you can do as little or as much as you want to.

If you want to stay in the UK, I'd get down to the Cornish coast. Get out and walk as much of the coastal path as you can. Cottages are cheap at this time of year, get one with a wood burner, take some good reading material and sleep like a baby.

If you want to go abroad, try the North of Ibiza...yes Ibiza. The north is quiet, rural, picturesque and a world away from the clubs and bustle of the south.

Further afield there's the island of Ko Yao Noi in Thailand. Muslim population, very little booze, 1 shop, deserted beaches, great weather, and cheap food.

Post-divorce I did an all inclusive holiday on my tod, not because I wanted to get hammered on free beer all day, but so I could have a week entirely in my own space. I ran and swam every day, made smart choices from the buffet and used the hotel gym, and came back very refreshed.

I've also done a couple of organised walking holidays in the Alps where eight hours of effort every day for one or two weeks does wonders, but as you're in a group, you may end up with loons, plus the weather's a bit more ski than walk just now...

If you want sun Egypt (if safe?) and the Canaries are good bets I'd say. Just avoid the upcoming half-term price hikes.
