LBC Radio this am - speed kills!
Discussion
Anybody catch this on Nick Ferrari's show on LBC Radio this morning?
Apparently various constabularies now offering "driver education" for some speeds by meeting the mother of a girl killed by a "speeder".
Usual load of misinformed bollox.
The catch? Girl was killed by a lad doing 48mph in a NSL
Awful thing to happen, but
HE WASN'T SPEEDING! Poor driving, lack of experience, maybe, inappropriate speed for conditions, possibly, but he wasn't speeding, so what relevance to people who have been caught for speeding!?
Another caller went on about an accident son had with somebody coming the other way. Accident happened at night, lad had only been driving a few months, other driver was "speeding", and over the dd limit. Don't know the facts but sounds a bit like the lad was trying to mitigate his blame. Sounds to me like booze was a big factor, but no, it gets added to the "speeding" argument... Most annoying was the fact they kept referring to the fact that the other driver had a Porsche - like that has ANY bearing on it!?

I heard the start of this on LBC but I was going so fast my radio wouldn't stay in tune.
I got stuck behind a stupid blob in a 4X4 RV on the A20 today from Sidcup to Eltham, she was doing exactly 40MPH (50MPH limit until Flamingo Park) in the outside lane. There was a queue of cars coaches and lorries all ducking and diving trying to get past her on the inside as she wouldn't move over.
So by her sticking below the limit she caused more frustration and danger than most of the people who go down this road normally just above the limit.

I would look the mother in the eyes and say "it IS YOUR fault that your daughter died because you did not teach her how to cross a road safely". Sanctimonious *****
That'll stop that campaign dead in its tracks!
(this is assuming the girl was a pedestrian)
the anti speed lobby interchange 'speed' 'speeding' and 'excessive speed' at will.
speed kills - well, an object that hasn't got speed is unlikely to kill as it isn't moving.
Excessive speed - driving too fast, ie 50 MPH round a tight bend, but still 10MPH within the NSL.
Speeding - the number on the speedo is greater than the number on the round signs.

I would class 'speeding' as 'driving at 28mph legally down a residential street with children playing on the pavements'
Therefore the woman who said the driver was speeding at 48mph may have been entirely correct, regardless of the eventual cause of the accident.

True, but no amount of limit enforcement will ever stop that will it? That's just poor observation. "Speeding" in this context is usually used as an argument for more cameras, black boxes, GPS trackers, humps or some other Orwellian control system. As horrid as losing a child (or adult, for that matter) in an accident must be, I'm fed up with anti-motoring groups wheeling bereaved families out at every opportunity. Not only does it obscure the real issues, but I also think it's cynical and exploitative to use grieving families to prop up a failing policy. Rather than admitting they're wrong and trying another approach, these people just dig their heels in some more and play the emotional blackmail card - makes me fume.
Possibly contrary to ARTICLE 3 - PROHIBITION OF TORTURE of the Human Rights Act 1998 : "No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment."
This particular 'treatment' appears in particular to degrade the death of the daughter, it also degrades the mother, degrades the person being 'punished' (by using a false premise) and degrades the system.
Streaky
