Need some comments from anyone who has been through the process of jumping a Red light. In short someone I know has "Alledgeldly been done for the offence, claimed to have ignored it for 1 year and then suggested they needed help to pay an £900 fine (said person also claims to have been presented with 6 points) although didn't have to go to court?!

They didn't HAVE to go to court, and quite probably didn't - but the case certainly did...

If they'd played nicely, they'd have almost certainly just had a 3pt FPN, perhaps half a day of tea and biccies.

Can imagine the case going to court, but is the standard points for this offence 3 and fine circa £100? If it was a parking fine I can understand a private car park firm putting additional charges on, but as its a criminal offence not sure how likely a £900 fine would be>?

Non appearance & heard in your absence at court (with no means testing for the court to go on) is likely to result in a bigger fine than you would have got from a FPN.

Did they ignore the original s.172 request for driver details ?

If so, 6 points and a fine, costs and surcharge could well have been ordered in absence.

As SS2 has said, if they ignored everything that they received it hasn't gone away but the original red light offence has turned into an S172 "Failing to Furnish" charge.

As the maximum points that can be given for a Red Light offence is 3 then he has been charged and convicted of something else. What is the offence code recorded on his licence? If it is MS90 then it's an S172 (which carries 6 points).

The £900 is probably not just the fine but includes costs (£620) and a victim surcharge (up to £85).
