Now then...

My trusty B6 A4 Avant let go the other week, and I'm looking at what I can get for around £5k to replace it.

My first thoughts were another Audi, but I was looking at the C6 A6 Avants. I really like them, but the only thing that puts me off is the 2.0 TDi engine, which is the one that falls in budget.

I'm not really a big fan of E61s, so I discounted them early on. I'd maybe go for an E39 Touring, but finding a good one may be a struggle?

The main contender at the moment for me is an E320 CDI, but I'm not sure of which age. If I spend a little more I can get around a 2007-09 such as the below, which I think look wonderful, but I don't know a thing about them.

The car doesn't need to be amazing on fuel, but 40mpg on a run would be nice.

I have been tempted to shrink the budget down to about £2k and get an Accord. I really like them in the purple colour you can get, and good old Honda reliability does appeal. Although they are bloody boring to look at and not the best to drive.

Any other suggestions?

The Audi I have now isn't confirmed to be dead yet - the cambelt tensioner 'fell off' the block as I was driving it... There is a chance it will live on with a new tensioner which I'll find out this weekend, but if not, I'll be after something to replace it with.

Open to anything really.

Not the most interesting what car thread, sorry!

I had a petrol Honda Accord and it was an excellent car, might be worth looking at Volvo V70's also or maybe a Subaru Legacy

I may be slightly bias but how about a e61 530d / 535d?

Edit - Ha, should have read further on before posting!

I'd forgot about the Volvos! I do like them. I'd quite like an auto though and the word 'geartronic' sounds like problems to me. I'll do some Googling.

Might have a look at the Saab 9-3 too!

I'm a bit scared of the E60 shape to be honest. Though a good mate of mine has one without any problems (yet), what I've read from being in the BMW circles for the past few years has put me off.

Just found a E39 though which I think is a contender!

Forgot to say, the car must have heated cow up front, which this E39 does! Love the wood, too.

Love the look of that e39. Number of good options too and with a new front wing would be fairly tidy.

I've had a e60 535d remapped to 320bhp and touch wood, have had zero issues in my 16k miles. It's not a cheap car to run and the basic things like brake discs are far from cheap.

If you're looking for an E39, I would recommend visiting the BMW 5-Series owners' forum, and browsing the for sale section.

forum.bmw5.co.uk/

When I owned an E39 Touring (a car I loved, written off by an inattentive A-Class driver), I used to visit the owners' forum on a regular basis.

There was always some enthusiast owner selling their mint E39 through the forum. The prices were typically 20-30% higher than Auto Trader fodder, but the cars were 100% better.

EDIT: I've also owned a B6 A4 Avant, and prefer the way an E39 Touring drives.

I bought a 55 plate E320CDI estate a couple of months ago. It's a late pre-facelift model, so has the newer (V6) engine and 7-speed auto. I believe the facelift cars are more reliable, for what it's worth.

Anyway. It's a nice old thing. It's very comfortable, quiet, rides well, well equipped, very relaxing to cover long distances in. It's quick enough (though remaps are available). Interior seems hard wearing. It does low 30's locally and low forties on the motorway. The seats are good, though those in my old Saab 9-5 were better. Not remotely sporting, but that was not a requirement.

The boots are not that big in the 9-3, the 9-5 is more on par with what you're looking at

Update:

Been to see a E91 330d manual tonight and really liked it. Going to ring insurance tomorrow then hopefully make a purchase!

I don't think it was as big as my A4 in the rear, but still looked to be enough room.

I really wanted one with i-Drive and heated leather, but this came up literally 1.6 miles away. I can't remember the last time I didn't drive 3 hours for a car! Also it's had the DPF taken care of which is a bonus.

Thanks for the suggestions!
