really hacked off at MOT failure on my XKR

MY 99 XKR failed the MOT today it needs a bit of welding after the hard year doing 400 miles in 2016.
What has really pissed me off is I asked the Garage to do the Service and carry out a "Pre MOT" which would have identified the problem and it could have been repaired before the Test. Why is it so hard to get simple instructions carried out by Garages I had the same issue with Halfords on my Wifes Car they did the MOT before the service.

You might need to aim a little higher than Halfords is my advice.

it wasnt Halfords.

It's the way a lot of garages work. MOT it first, see what it fails on, advise and then fix as part of the service.

I'm sure I read somewhere it's something to do with MOT pass rates. If they fixed everything (during a service) then did the MOT, they'd never fail any and would get a visit from the ministry questioning why they never logged any fails.

I think your right must be to ensure they meet their quota's of failures and advisories .

It is both side of the floor pan where they have put a stupid extra piece of metal perfectly designed to trap salt and water. the rest is in really good order so not a massive repair.

I've been told by two different garages that they have to test cars "as presented" - they're not supposed to work on them first. This is to give the VSA a proper view of the condition of cars on the road.

That makes some sense, however, I understand their interpretation is wrong. "As presented" means as presented for the test, not as presented to the garage.
