So where does one draw the line between what's funny and what's not funny?

How long do you have to wait before you can joke about something? If I make an Abraham Lincoln joke it will be funny, if I make a joke about black slavery from the same era I'll get strung up.

Who decides what's socially acceptable and what makes one a scumbag.

Where is the line between politically correct and being an ahole and who decides where this line is?

I have a pretty sick sense of humour, if it's funny then I'll laugh at it but sometimes I get lambasted for it. I didn't invent the joke, i just retold it.

It's not down to the joke.
It's not down to the timing.
It's not down to the person telling the joke!
The guiding factor is the person hearing the joke!

The Turkish holiday resort that thought it would be jolly spiffing to don terrorist garb and run onto the beach waving fake guns a year or so ago, thinking, in their retarded third world sense of humour, that tourists would find it incredibly funny, in light of what had recently happened in Tunisia.

Not funny. Most definitely not funny.

"Bol? Or Arshorle?"
"Neither. I want it for my armpits,"

Is probably the funniest thing ever.

Is the correct answer.

All the others are just examples of what they find funny rather than answering the OP's question.

This. That is hilarious for some people (me) but distasteful, horrible for quite a few (including my wife who thinks I'm sick for laughing at some of those!).

The fact that people aren't laughing at your jokes, means they're not funny and you might be an asshole.

Funny jokes - the people that are listening laugh
You're an asshole - people don't laugh and lambast you.

Good example!
I've got into trouble before now for jokes which were a bit risky!
Personally I laughed at this one but it's quite obvious that many would be offended!
IME experience I've found that jokes can fall into 3 categories.
1) Those which do not ridicule anything or any one. ( I started a thread in an FB group I'm in asking for examples of these and was surprised at how many jokes can fall into this category).
2) Those jokes in which somebody or something is the butt of the joke but not in a tasteless way. I've found that the butt of these jokes often laughs along whilst others often are outraged on their behalf.
3) Are the 'bad taste' jokes! I, personally, can accept these for what they are and, usually, laugh at them. However, you have to be very sure of your target audience as many people will be outraged and will react badly.

In a similar vein, I believe that there are 3 types of people (humour wise)
1) Are those who can accept jokes for what they are, a different view or twist on life, and can find the funny side of anything. Maybe this is their way of dealing with life's problems?
2) Are those people who do have a sense of humour but have their own sense of morality which makes them believe that any joke they hear which refers to certain types of people or situations is a direct dig or insult.
3) Are those humourless types who don't 'get' jokes and believe that any comedic references are a direct dig or slur on the subject.

Matching the correct type of joke to the correct recipient is an art which can be difficult to learn.
Carefully matching the wrong kind of joke to purposely outrage your target audience seems to be the favourite ploy of many on here!

No offence intended to any particular group of readers! biggrin

Jim Jefferies absolutely nails that in the first few minutes of Freedumb:
