The rear calipers of my SL500 are not great (from an efficiency point of view) and I'm planning on rebuilding / replacing them (I'll decide when I remove them from the car). The backing plates are pretty rusty - I haven't checked if they are still available from MB but on the basis factory paint may not be that great, I'm going to clean the existing up while I have the calipers etc. off the car. I plan on having them blasted to remove rust and then either have them powder coated or use a high temperature paint. My question is how hot do the back plates get, and is powder coating going to survive there?

Thanks.

You know I don't think the backplates get that hot, especially the rears. Hammerite stays stuck to the disc "top hats" so I think you'll be fine.

Are you sure the calipers are the problem? Knackered calipers tend to stick on, efficiency is more down to pads, discs and fluid.

Ray, thanks. I'll get them powder coated.

Thanks for the advice - it had new disks and pads not many miles ago (but quite some time ago, before I bought it early 2015) and I've flushed and bled the brakes. Before I replace or rebuild the calipers I'll have a play around with hoses etc., but I think a piston or two has corroded and stuck limiting travel.

They won't get hot enough to cause a problem with any coatings.

I have recently purchased a brand new rear pair, they come painted black and I am going to give them another coat of Hammerite metal paint before fitting.

Thanks - I'll see how bad they are when they're off the car, and if too far gone I will replace - I may still go powder coat for robustness.
