Yesterday at the end of school the uncle of a 5/6 year old girl hit her in the face leaving a red mark. This wasn't observed by an adult but the uncle did not deny it and the girl's older brother as good as confirmed it when he said "But it was your fault because you did X".

This was brought to the attention of the headmaster as the girl was very upset and said she didn't want to go with her uncle as she was scared of him. Is the school duty bound to report this to the Poice/authorities?

I'm just interested as it was my wife that took her to the headmaster and I was wondering if she is likely to be contacted by anyone abut it.

The school will (very likely) make a report to local authority safeguarding team (which seem to vary by name across different boroughs / authorities. Then it's up to them.

I've known schools massively over react to something much less serious than this so yes, they should report it (CEOPS?).

As already said it will definitely be escalated from the school pretty rapidly I would expect.

Would recommend putting a note (in writing) to the school as a complaint to the head'. The school will have a complaint handling process which they must (should!) follow, alongside any safeguarding process.

Can I complain retrospectively about the teachers who threw wooden board rubbers at the back of my head?

In fairness their argument was always "if you'd been looking at the blackboard you'd have seen it coming".

Had an incident like that in my school. Not me clonked by the blackboard rubber. We were very impressed by his accuracy. Don't mess with moody Mr Moodysmile

Ahh the joys of youth. I fondly recall Mr close at Catholic school picking up 6yr olds by their neck.

I had a physics teacher that would pull a sprig of hair on your temple, bloody painful. You didn't talk during lessons again though.

Dr Anderson, our deputy headmaster punching a 15 year-old boy he caught bullying a prep-school boy so hard in the stomach that it floored him, before standing over him, hands on hips, bellowing "How do YOU like being bullied Coulten?!"

Probably wouldn't get away with it these days.....

In today's world you are not allowed to speak the same language that the kids understand. the universal language is always' taste of your own medicine'. Unfortunately, the kids today are too soft!

I suppose that is needed if you want the next generation to just get on the hamster wheel and keep the show on the road! make them stupid, soft and entitled!

Possibly not, it might even be frowned upon these days. It would certainly raise an eyebrow or two.

Mr Wellborne was an angry old man. A bachelor by choice (no woman would ever have chosen him) and with big anger management issues. Known for hitting kids over the back of their hands with a metal ruler for the most minor of offences.

One day whilst standing in line to leave the class he decided that the voices in his head were me talking and proceeded to do that straight single finger jab to the solar plexus as he emphasised each word of his tirade of abuse. I tried to explain that i had not been talking and did ask him to please not jab me like that. He decided that he didn't like it when people pointed out he was in the wrong and so chose to have another tirade at me, accompanied by extra, and more vigorous, finger poking.

He didn't see the punch, nor did he see (due to the tears filling his eyes), me exit the classroom at high speed as I ran to the Head Teachers office.

I was half way through my side of the story with the head before Mr W. made it to the office, bursting in without any form of knocking. Head told him in no uncertain terms that his behaviour in bursting into the office was not acceptable and that he should wait in the staff room until the head came to see him. The head and i continued our discussion.

Up shot was that i got 2 weeks of Head Teachers detention during which he and i read Autocar, Autosport and discussed the news of the day. My parents and I thought that that was about right. I'm not sure even the head gave a st what Mr Welborne thought about it.

Ah, the good old days.

And people wonder why things are the way they are today.

To be honest I do think that things have gone too far the other way.

Regardless of the tale above I was subjected to a lot of bullying at school, mainly due to the fact that I was round and fat and refused to be subjugated. I would take it and suck it up for quite a while but every so often I would get fed up and it usually ended up with at least one of the bullies in the sanatorium.

I hate to think what it would be like for a 13 year old me in school today. Pure hell i would imagine as schools seem to still be utterly incapable of dealing with bullying (ignore them, they will get bored - yeah that really works, they just turn up the heat and get nastier and more physical in the real world) and someone like me, who was usually quite a big bigger than them but 99% of the time a gentle giant, ends up getting excluded when a few of them need to go to hospital. One thing i learnt the hard way - if you are going to fight back against bullies you don't give them the chance to get back up again until you are long out of there.

I'll leave that up to my wife.

What would she be complaining about? The actions of the uncle?
