"The term déjà vu is French and means, literally, "already seen." Those who have experienced the feeling describe it as an overwhelming sense of familiarity with something that shouldn't be familiar at all"

As far as I am aware this has never been discussed in the lounge, so we are ok on that score but do you get it ? how often and what is it ?

I get it less as I get older but sometimes it happens, comes out of the blue and blindsides you, has it ever been explained, is it precognition ?

IMO it's just glitches in the firing 'mechanisms' of the synapses in the brain and nervous system. Maybe along side stuff you've dreamed but can't remember in the subconscious.

Not really the Deja Vu the op is talking about but we had been looking for a new house between July and October last year. Viewed 2 houses in a 10 year old developement, loved them but lost out on them. A third came up so off we went to view and the missus said walking in the back door (the drive is at the back) I am having a deja vu as all the three houses were the same layout and look etc. On going to view the front elevation the house name was Deja Vu.

I do believe it is caused by memories being sent directly to the long term memory banks and accidentally bypassing the short term memory, some electrical I pulse issue.

Thus you immediately think of them as a vague memory rather than as a newly seen event.

I seem to recall reading that somewhere before, maybe....

hehe I was going to say that.

Have not experienced it for along time actually, but 15 years ago I'd get it fairly frequently.

Yes. I have extremely powerful visions that eventually are embodied in reality. Unfortunately they're always overwhelmingly banal. The last one was looking down a straw at the Matterhorn.

As a kid of 10, we went to a stately home in Scotland. The lord of the house was disabled in a riding accident and so had lifts installed in the house. All disabled visitors were given special access and a guide around the building.

My dad was using a wheelchair at the time due to his health and we were given access to the house via the private apartments and through corridors that only staff and the owners used.

Whilst walking down one hallway, the guide started telling us about something we were about to see. I immediately piped up that it was paintings and poems written about the old servants by members of the ancestral family. The guide was totally shocked by me saying this and asked if I had ever been there before, which we hadn't. He asked me if anyone else had told us about this corridor, which they hadn't.

Sure enough, when we turned the corner, there was a whole wall of paintings, photos and poems about all the old servants going back several generations.

How I knew about them being there I will never know but my parents and the guide were really spooked at the time as it wasn't a publicised fact about the house.

Smiler.

True story:

Yesterday, I was writing an email to a business contact. I got about halfway through it, and began to suspect that I'd already written it. The more I typed, the more I became convinced that I was just repeating an email I'd typed previously.

The feeling became so great that, after half an hour's consideration, I phoned him up, and asked him if he'd recently received an email from me.

"What was it about?" he asked

I told him what it was about.

"I don't think so," he said. "What did it say?"

I read him the half email I'd written, and recited, seemingly from memory, the half that I felt I'd written before.

"Nope." says he. "I've not had that."

So I apologised, and promised to finsish it and sent it to him in the next five minutes.

"Not much fking point now, is there?" he pointed out.
