I think it's UNC too.

In fact - Wiki agrees - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripod_(photography)

1/4-20 UNC

That's interesting as i always knew them as Whitworth when I sold them in the 1990s. Just as well they are interchangeable.

Straying off topic slightly, on that page what is the grip in this picture between the monopod and the camera/lens ? I could use one of those on my own monopod

Manfrotto Action Head 222

An old one of those came on my secondhand (ancient) 055C and I put up with it for a few months before getting a decent ball head. You'll find them on Fleabay from time to time I'm sure.

Possibly find it good/useful or may find it a complete PITA - bit of a marmite head!

Thanks. I currently use my 70-200 fixed directly to a very light carbon monopod, if I need to change angle I move the whole thing

I'll take a look

With monopods your better off with a head that only moved in one direction like this

^^^^ Much better - also because it's a Swiss-Arca fitting and you can easily set up portrait mode shooting with an L-bracket

I'm sure you didn't; this has gone way off-topic but may still be useful to some!!!

How long does that take to adjust? My prime use is equine photography, I need to shift position a few feet between jumps with minimal vertical variation between shots and just seconds to set them up. Monopod because the 70 to 200 IS (perfect for equine work) can feel a little heavy by the time a few gee-gees have gone round a course

Sorry, I have really gone off topic here, someone say if I should make this another thread

I use this one (well, the previous version to this one) http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-kirk-mpa-2-mono...

You have tension control on the tilt, so once set you can adjust with a little pressure to the lens / body. Don't you find a monopod a little restrictive with a 70-200 though? I find it slows me down.

I use similar - a Manfrotto 234RC - and leave it just loosened to allow the camera and lens to tilt backward and forwards as required. It really does make a difference if you're using a heavy combo for a long event. I think these heads are primarily intended to tilt in the other plane to allow swift and secure switching between landscape and portrait orientation.

I don't find the monopod too unwieldy, I use a carbon fibre Gitzo traveller that weighs less than 800 grams and collapses to 40cm

A head that rotates rapidly through 90 degrees for the occasional portrait shot would be interesting (horses and jumps tend to fit a landscape frame for the most part)

Most long lenses collar mounts do that anyhow
