Cayman GT4 rear suspension / roll cage noise on harsh bumps
Discussion
My Cayman GT4 Clubsport spec has an irritating noise from the rear (both sides) when the car goes over certain bumps in the road surface, particularly harsh bumps (sunken grid tops, slight pot holes) at moderate speeds.
Initially thought it was maybe a damper issue or something loose but had a brief look around and can't see anything amiss on a ramp. Now thinking it sounds like the noise is 'in the car' and suspect maybe it's one of the roll cage joints but it does happen at both sides of the car and I've never known a roll cage to make such noises...???
Guess I'll have to book it in to OPC and see if they can come up with the cause if I can't get my head around it...

I've heard other CS owners say the same. I think it was identified as the bolts that fix part of the cage, but others may know better. My car's not a CS.Initially thought it was maybe a damper issue or something loose but had a brief look around and can't see anything amiss on a ramp. Oh.....
I have spoken to a couple of other GT4 owners and they both said they also had 'noises' from the rear but I'm struggling to accept its the way they all are as something is very obviously not right.
Think my OCD with noises might get me hooked on finding the cause and a solution...

normal.. wait till you try one with a full FIA spec cage.I have spoken to a couple of other GT4 owners and they both said they also had 'noises' from the rear but I'm struggling to accept its the way they all are as something is very obviously not right.

Defo OCD, all GT Porsches with cages make strange noises, they just don't like bumps...I have spoken to a couple of other GT4 owners and they both said they also had 'noises' from the rear but I'm struggling to accept its the way they all are as something is very obviously not right.

Mine does it and after seeing some leeds cars go in for new dampers my guys at Notts had a look they agreed it sounded odd and replaced dampers.... just drove it yesterday and it still does it...
I think it is when the shocks are cold and have been left to stand. Once it has clanged once it is normally pretty much ok...
Would love to know what is making the noise thought and why!

Right so this noise is apparently 'normal' for a GT4, but has anybody actually found the cause of the noise or been back to OPC under warranty for investigation or clarification??
Can't understand why the noise is present in the 1st place, why it seems to be accepted and why it can't be rectified. I do like a challenge!

It didn't affect every Mk 1 996 GT3 Clubsport, but I know of several cars that had the issue.
Adjusting and tightening the cage fixings (both where the rear sections met, and the mounting points to the rear turrets) had no effect.
My second car was noisy with PSS9's fitted, when I put it back on to standard dampers and springs, it was silent. Read into that what you will.

Thanks for the feedback and my initial thought was suspension but now it does sound like the noise could be internal in the cabin so need to investigate further. Hey, might even find a solution...!Adjusting and tightening the cage fixings (both where the rear sections met, and the mounting points to the rear turrets) had no effect.

Just had a thought.
The Cayman has, I believe, a "weight" in the rear hatch that is designed to remove resonance from the rear hatch. I had one of the very first 987 Cayman and I remember now a lot of chatter about this weight making noises.
I'm now wondering if the the GT4 just throws this weight around more under certain conditions.
Something to look into, Chris?

If its a high pitched squeak at shoulder height its coming from a very small bit of the seat belt mechanism that just touches the cage. Get a small bit of rubber and make it wedge shaped, get a small pair of pliers and wedge it between the two, trust me it works!
As for the cage, yup, they all do that
