Looking for an A4 estate TDi
Discussion
My budget is up to around 5k. I'm looking for a TDi A4 estate. That's about it.
What variants should I be avoiding for known technical issues that are costly? I can strip and rebuild a Rover V8 so quite handy with the spanners. And which variants are the best to look for? I guess they are all going to feel pretty comfy coming from an Astravan, so what's left? Fuel economy? They all look good looking enough for me (the deep grill does it for me).
Any constructive advice appreciated

The 2.0 140bhp common rail engine is a nice unit, we recently sold a 2010 A3 with this lump and it pushed the car along nicely.
We didnt have any dpf or egr issues in 2 years of ownership, and did a mixture of short and long journeys.
The brother in law has the car now and the dpf light has been on twice already, but only because it was being used for short runs.
Access to the egr for cleaning was almost impossible without a lift so i never bothered.
The s line is a nice spec to look for, i cant comment on the 170 bhp engine as ive never driven one but the 140 model is easy to remap if it takes your fancy.
I cant say ive heard any issues with the car, was looking for one myself last year but a 2005 passat came my way which was too good to turn down.

Look at a Seat Exeo. These are a B7 Audi A4 rebadged but with 2.0 litre cr tdi engine. My old one is at A30 car sales, Hook at £6495 with 54000 miles and a full main agent history. Its been there since November so they may be open to an offer. Mods - I have no connection with said business.

God, that makes for some grim reading. Think I'll steer clear of the 2.0 variant.Did Audi do an A4 estate with the deep grill and a PD engine?

Good advice. I have a 2013 exeo with the 2.0 tdi 170ps CR unit. It's great and just a rebadged Audi A4 B7. You won't get much Audi for 5k but you'll get a young Exeo.pfnsht said:

That makes sense. But, I just love the look of the Audi. I'm not bothered about galactic mileage as I'll just rebuild the engine when necessary. But, the well documented 2.0CR problems scare me. Hence wanting a 1.9 PD.Last year I sold my 2010 A4 avant tdi for £6000.
Bear in mind 130,000 miles on the clock, with a cambelt change and water pump done at 120,000. It was a tech model, manual.
I put it up at £6500... didnt get a sniff.
I put 4 new tyres on it, and the calls started but no viewings.
I let it off the driveway at £6000.
Great car, averaging over 55mpg, but i did a lot of motorway work.
I would try and stretch your budget to 6k... Cambelt service was about 400 quid at an independant, so try and make sure thats done.It hardly used any oil, trigering the long life service after about 18 thousand miles, was very light on brakes and tyres, but that could just be because i didnt rag it too much. I dont think you'll get a B8 off a forecourt at that price.

I'm not aware of any issues with the CR engines, aside from fibbing about emissions. The 2.0 PD engines are the troublesome ones. I've put 60k on an Exeo, no issues whatsoever, and the engine is much more refined than the 1.9 PD. It drives very differently, lacks the big shove of torque but quite likes to rev.
Exeo also gets a nicer interior, from the convertible, and is pretty well equipped as standard.
