How mechanically minded are you? Track days are demanding, if you're on a budget being able to carry out servicing and repairs yourself will save you a lot of money.

This.

Auto lights, auto wipers, cruise control... Brilliant on track and pennies to keep running.

Buy at £1.5-2k and make sure the cambelt is done, £500 buys plenty of maintenance!

Yes, or an old Civic Jordan or something with a B16 in it that hasn't rusted away yet.

172/182 easy. It's a predictable option for a reason. Just make sure it's not a Cup model, as that will be unbearable as a daily. Get one with all the toys. These are still a riot to drive on track and will be the best of both worlds.

Yes the only reason I didn't add the MX5 is the mpg - I averaged 27 in my fairly standard Mk1.

That seems low. I average 35MPG in my Mk2 MR2 on daily duties. Less on tanks where track days are involved obviously...

There are a few i've noticed on here that share your particular sentiments. But, generally, this opinion seems to be the minority.

OP might either hate it or love it but i always recommend it as an option if it fits the criteria to this thread or similar.

182!!

If you are mechanically minded and happy to do some work yourself I would happily recommend a 182.

I've had mine for 3 years now and it still puts a smile on my face everytime i drive it. That more than makes up for the parts i have bought for it.

Insurance is reasonable too, when i was 21 I think I paid around £650.

Had my Clio 172 Cup for nearly 7yrs, despite hillclimbing it, it has been very reliable, the only major failure was the gearbox (diff) needing a rebuild but thats not unheard of on Clios.

It is as much fun to drive as my 996 & as such gets used daily. Not sure I'd want it as my only car so as suggested previously, maybe a 182 with AC etc would be a better option for you?

ST170 is a good shout, i have one as a loan car whilst my car is being repaired and its really surprised me. I find the traction control a little intrusive, but apart from that its been doing well as a daily driver and is good fun around the twisty lanes
