Painting 'fake' marble

Our lounge has a really horrible beige coloured fake marble fire surround which I want to paint white, but what paint should I use? Would metal primer then gloss be best or would that 'makeover paint' meant for kitchen cupboards be okay? Any ideas gratefully received.
