Going hand in hand with this thread what nice things have your neighbours done for you?

This past weekend my neighbour put his head under the open bonnet of my car whilst I was trying to figure out what was wrong with it. Within literally 3 seconds he pointed out what was wrong, so I fixed it (79p jubilee clip did the job!) and now its back to running fine. A few weeks previous he mentioned the earth cables on my car might need replacing after I told him about some starting issues and lo and behold it ran fine afterwards.

My neighbours on the other side of my house are often away at weekends so without being asked we always put their bins out ready for collection on the Monday and always get a 'thank you' either popped through the door or message via Facebook.

The old lady across the road had just come out of hospital and was convalescing at home when her daughter turned up on her drive; I caught her outside before she went in and asked for her phone number just in case I needed to contact her in an emergency if her mum fell ill etc. The daughter was very thankful and remarked how she had done the same to an elderly couple in her road a few weeks previous.

One blustery night our blue and black bins blew over and before we knew anything about it our neighbours had picked up the rubbish put it back in our bins and we caught them putting our bins back in their usual place. A nice bottle of wine was their reward.

A few years back when it was really snowing in the Hampshire / Surrey / Berkshire borders the cul-de-sac we lived in was really icy, and I mean I wouldn't have been surprised to see Torvill and Dean out there. So my neighbour and I did shuttle runs to the Grit Box at the bottom of the hill and spread it over the road, and used shovels to break up the ice and make it easy for those in our little bit of [the end of] cul-de-sac, ranging at that time from 2 to 90+, to be safely mobile.

So what have you done to help your neighbours / what have they done to aide you?

Of all the threads about how to get a girl's phone number...

We have the bins put in often if we are out, and the woman across the road works from home and so seems to be the drop-off point for all of the deliveries for everyone in the road.

We get on well with our neighbours so it's the usual taking in parcels, putting out the bins if needed etc. My wife's looked after their daughter when they needed to pop out unexpectedly. It's such a relief to have nice neighbours and they've struck up a good friendship.

Was the steaming water pissing out the radiator hose not a giveaway?

Giving me back 20m^2 of land they initially claimed belonged to them. I pick up discarded bottles and stuff that passing commuters leave outside my neighbours homes. That's my bit of community spirit.

You would've thought I would have noticed the AFM hose not being connected hence the poor idling and lumpy running for the previous mile or so before I pulled on to my drive, but I was looking under the bonnet for something electrical (melted relay etc) not a bloody hose. Its nearly always the easiest thing that's at fault....

Have an older lady living on one side. She has not been very well and not able to get out as much over the last 6 months. My OH has driven her to Doctors appointments a few times and we always knock when we are going shopping to check if she needs anything.

On the other side are a mum with her daughter (and daughter's boyfriend). Mum works as a product demonstrator in supermarkets and pops around occasionally with unused demo stock (from washing powder to biscuits).

The daughter's boyfriend is the total opposite of what our press would have us believe teenage boys are - he never stops. Works a couple of jobs and will often pop around and cut our grass whilst we are out (when he is doing theirs he just carries on)

My OH works in a private school and gets numerous bottles of win etc. at the end of term. As we don't drink at home we pass them over for them to enjoy smile

A few doors down we do have a "crazy" lady who comes knocking on doors asking for money. We got warned when we moved in not to give her any as she would just come back for more!

The ancient old lady who lives next door helpfully left all her milk piling up on her doorstep over the xmas period which came in handy when the shops were closed!

I left a small thank you card on her doorstep in the New Year but that's still lying there as well. Oh well, some people are just ungrateful I suppose!

Moved in to our 10 house cul-de-sac in April last year. We had to move Puggit Jnr to the new local school rather urgently because of problems at his old school. Puggette Jnr is still at the old school 15 mins away. Neighbours drop off and pick up Puggit Jnr smile

Already entered a dog looking after and cat-sitting agreement with other neighbours.

Proper friendly place.

We have two pet rabbits who have a large run in the back garden. While we were on holiday the missus mum went round to feed them and found all the neighbours running around in a panic. Turns out the little sods had chewed through the mesh - it was thick stuff, so I think they had been working on it for a while Shawshank style. They had let themselves out and were wandering around on the cul-de-sac happy as Larry. The neighbours caught them and barricaded them back in their hutch and run as best they could so we could sort them out when we got home. The missus would have been devastated if anything had happened.

The same neighbours also do a lot of woodwork. I had mentioned to them in passing that I was going to build a wheelie bin tidy to house them in the garden. Came home the next day to a nice pile of timber and a note to say it was left over from their last project and we could use it for our bin tidy.

my driveway and garage is just round the corner from my house , I parked up yesterday and my missues and kids buggered off quick and left me with the shopping to make the 10 trips to the house and back

The neighbours little lad (11 or 12?) saw me and came up to boot and said "excuse me, do you need any help" he then helped me carry a few bags round

Lovely lad, nice to see a polite kid

Several are stuck up s that wouldn't call the fire brigade if they saw smoke pouring out of our house.

One neighbour has looked in on our dogs if we've gone out for the day, win win situation as they love dogs & lost theirs a few years back. He needed to borrow our camping trailer last year, took me a while to empty it & pump the tyres up but I did it quite happily.

One immediate neighbour will always help out if asked, he went up his own ladder to clear my gutters last year when my frozen shoulder meant I couldn't do it, they have frequently given us lifts if they're going that way. In return, they always pop round for milk, or an egg or whatever they've run out of!

I'm fed up with helping my neighbours out as most of them just stab you in the back to other jealous tossers. Old folk eh!!!! You just cannot please them all.

Well yesterday I went to help a guy whose car had broken down and blocked the lane leading to my house. Took jump leads and a gallon of petrol down, but still couldn't start the car, so helped him push it the 100yds or so to a passing place so people could drive in and out from their houses. He wasn't a neighbour, but his car was preventing all of my neighbors from either getting home or getting out.

Isn't doing stuff like this, or helping clear snow, etc, just being part of a community?

Whenever I have the pressure washer out for the car, I normally do something for one of the neighbours, like their front path or their car. They seem grateful.

We walk next doors' dog occasionally, when she is out for an afternoon running into an evening.

Ours have taken in parcels or given us random ingredients that we run out of when cooking. And they nearly always let us have footballs and stomp rockets back when they kids (or I) get a little enthusiastic.

It takes a while to get to know the neighbours, but I think it's worthwhile.
