Poll: How have you been caught speeding on a motorway or a dual carriageway (NSL) after 9pm?

Was it:

a. Police officer pulling you over
b. Police officer not pulling you over but receiving NIP through the post
c. Speed camera van

Have seen many a car pulled over by unmarked Audis / BMWs on M25 late night runs (M40-M23 junctions). Almost guaranteed to see it at least once each run IME.

They get offended when you ask.

Many years ago got pulled after it took the traffic cop 9 miles to catch me..

Ended up in court looking at a ban, but ended up getting 3 points and a £50.00 fine 10 months later. Let's say I was very lucky that day.

Many more years ago, when I was a nipper, and my dad had a M535i we visited some relatives near Edinburgh. Mr grumpy Scottish policeman apparently took 20 minutes to catch him up (it was a diesel Astra).

Interestingly he did not get a ticket. There were various theories about this, but my Police Surgeon uncle, thought that the Policeman required a second proof of speed - be it another person, or a speed device etc...

Mr Policeman was very not impressed when he challenged my father on whether there was ice outside. He pointed to his on board computer and said it was 4 degree's outside so not cold enough for ice...

I thought even a single officer with an opinion was sufficient on a motorway?

I've only ever been stopped once on Mway and it was years ago. It was probably after 9pm and they just wanted a 'chat'.

So that would be D (or E or F) Stopped but no further action.

Scotland 35 years ago. Things may have changed.

Always remember being in the back of my dad's car on the way back from Heathrow one night when I was 11 or 12 years old (early 2000s) and being pulled. Me, brother, mum, all snoozing away when dad wakes us all with an "Oh, fu-"

Pulls over, officer comes to the window and suggests he "had to do over 100 to catch up". My dad, being the loud-mouth he is, suggests that he perhaps could have caught up at 75, only it would have taken a little longer. Dad then said "Would I put my family at risk to get home ten minutes early? What kind of father do you think I am?"

Forget the exact conversation, but officer tells us to have a nice night and to be safe. Dad throws a comment about the officer's car being unlikely to do 100 any way after he walks off.

1st time police with portable gun chased me through a village and pulled me over. 2nd and last time was a camera van hiding on the side of the road.

Pulled by a marked car on M25 anti clock after joining at J9. 10 miles later and blues came on.

I was in my van driving at a very good standard, pulling in where i could and indicating at every manoeuvre. When i stopped the officer said they had followed me for 9 miles at an average of 90-95Mph. The only reason they let me off was that he couldn't fault my driving.

How lucky was i?

Usually The "opinion" of the Officer and then a Speed check. Back then he would have had to use VASCAR or his speedo which if he couldn't catch him at the right spots meant he couldn't collaborate it.

Pulled over by an unmarked car a few months back. Completely missed him! He told me the car following me would be getting a NIP but not sure if I believe him on that.

Got a load of BS about the appalling road conditions when the road was barely damp and traffic was light. I didn't bother pointing that out as it wouldn't have got me anywhere and he was correct about me speeding. I was surprised to be booked for exactly the speed my speedo said - so much for 10% speedo exaggeration.

It has actually slowed me down too, will see how long that lasts for.

I always do that. It seems almost everyone does it.
