I have been trying to buy a coat from Crombie for the past week or so, but am struggling. I have ordered several but they aren't what I want. To get what I like it looks like I will need to spend approaching a grand and I suspect I can get one made for that.

I am Midlands based but can travel.

Any suggestions please? It needs to be a tailored, smart coat. Like this.

Apologies if I'm somehow being a flid, but isn't "tailored" and "made to measure" the same thing? So is the OP trying to find a style they like, or a size of an off the shelf garment that fits right?

Not trying to be a PH arse, the only tailored thing I've ever owned was probably knitted by me gran.

It's confusing.

In this instance, tailored means with a structured shape.

Made to measure means a tailor will take the measurements and show fabric, the garment is made elsewhere.

Bespoke is as made to measure, but the tailor makes the garment on his premises.

What are you going to do with the coats that you have ordered?

I can take a couple from you if the price is right.

Are you prepared to pay more than Crombie will, when they give me a full refund?

I can absolutely recommend New and Lingwood Jermyn Street.

They adjusted an off the peg overcoat for me to a perfect fit for (if memory serves) £150.
The measurements, adjustments and final fitting all done by the in-house designer/tailor.
Given the current sale prices, this would seem a reasonable option...

Nothing like the creation of a bespoke suit/coat of course, but having the designer choose where material is tucked and stitched with perfect sympathy for the original design is a real bonus.
In my case, it was explained that the coat sleeves were shortened at the shoulder without the removal of material, thus allowing them to be lengthened again.
My son is a bit bigger than me, he may come to appreciate that detail one day smile

I did look at N+L actually GB. Their covert coat looks good, though it is a proper covert coat and consequently a bit more "country" than I require.

I have just ordered one, thanks. I have also ordered a blue Crombie. I will choose between the two when they arrive.

I was thinking, in line with the photo you posted, more like this one; http://www.newandlingwood.com/gb/wool-herringbone-...

I have the same in a PoW check/Glen plaid from a couple of seasons ago. Still gets compliments.
Excellent tailored fit via a back belt, length is to mid-calf.
My only 'complaint' would be the flap over the breast pocket that prevents the wearing of a pocket square.

A smart looking coat but I want single breasted, fly front.

I think I will need it. I have a Crombie and an Adam arriving tomorrow hopefully. My office will be awash with coats.

I got a quote for one from Henry Herbert MTM by the way. It was going to be £2k and 8 weeks.

Hah, no chance.

The Crombie's just arrived. It's their signature retro coat in navy. It does look very nice.

I am going to wait for the significantly cheaper one from Adam tomorrow, to compare the two.

I am quite interested to see what the Adam quality is like. If it's okay I may order one of these.

Hah, this has just arrived. It has surprised me in exactly how good it is.

Is it the same quality as the Crombie? No, of course not. But it does look blooming good for a quarter of the price. In fact the shoulders fit better.

I now have a dilemma - keep the cheaper one and maybe replace it in a few years, or buy the Crombie? I tend to always buy the best I can afford but, nice though the Crombie is, I am not persuaded that it is the very last word in quality.
