I've talked the missus into sitting around in a bar in Italy for a few hours while I do this -

Wetting myself with excitement! The pass is closed to motor traffic from Trafoi, got a hotel room in Trafoi, now all I need to do is get Stelvio fit!

They do the same in the French Alps on many of the climbs.

I did a weekend there last summer when they closed the pass from the Bormio side. We added the Gavia and Mortirolo climbs into our itinerary too. I wrote a blog entry on it afterwards. Aiming High.

I remember reading that a year or so ago, and just re-read it, well written. I wanted to do the descent to Bormio and back as well, but we'll be heading back to Blighty after the ride and I probably don't want to be too tired for the drive home...
