A motoring solicitor I used to know a few years ago, used to say if you are stopped by a police car, for whatever reason, speeding, rear light out etc, it's always better to get out and approach the policeman as he was walking over to your car and say something like "Hello officer, anything wrong?"

He reasoned that if you were still sat in your car he had a psychological advantage over you, because he was looking down to you in your seat, whereas if you are eye to eye you stand a better chance of just getting a "ticking off".

Opinions?

If American films and TV are anything to go by, don't try this there

Why get out in potentially into moving traffic, don't get that.

Then again having never been stopped what do I know.

I got out of my car, was invited to sit in the patrol car, cautioned and told to watch the video... For minor it might work but i doubt most would be swayed by it

Interesting point, what if it's not a proper plod, been a couple of those up here lately, potentially hi jacking cars. If you get out, it makes easier for them to nick it.

No, leave the engine running and as the cop approaches blip the throttle, he'll run back to his car I'm sure.

It's important to remember that police time is precious, so make sure when you get out of your vehicle that you run towards the police officer when you greet them.

Also, it's vital to show positive sign language, so spread your arms as wide as you can to show an open mentality.

And finally, communication is vital, so shout loudly and assertively. Volume is more important than clarity.

Well, yes, obviously it depends where you are, and only if it's safe to do so.

He told me this back in the seventies, maybe things are different now with all the guns and knives about?

You've taken your time thinking about it and deciding to 'post' about it.

To be fair, Pistonheads didn't even bother being around when Wacky Racer heard this advice. How lazy is that?

Was this the 1870s? We're talking "Ripper Street" aren't we?

Only trouble is if they pull you over for not wearing your belt and you step out of the car there's no proof if they're wrong.

Personally I can see the original point but I'd rather stay put and put the window down.

Surely as red-blooded PH'ers we wait until the copper is alongside the car, then go full throttle, flame-spitting launch control and tear off down the road?

No?

Also it's important for the police to see you are unarmed, so strip naked quickly before getting out the car and running toward them.
