California Black Plates

Hi folks. Does anyone know of a UK supplier of California black plates (yellow on black)? I can find several suppliers that do more modern Cali plates, and even the famous blue ones, but I can't find anyone who does the black ones. This is for a 1969 car.

I do have link to a supplier of 'vintage' style USA plates, including Cali black plates, but it's on another PC, but will post the link for you later this evening....
And I assume you're aware that 1969 is the last year black plates were issued in Cali

Thanks, that would be great. Yes, I did know 1969 was the last year. I'm slightly torn actually because the car is a August 69 build, but a 1970 model. So I don't actually know what colour plates it would have worn originally (indeed it might not even have been registered in California, but I think it was).

In that case, from what I've read up on it previously, a 70MY vehicle would have been issued with the new blue plates, the black plates ended with the end of MY69.

Yes, almost certainly, as Aug 69 would be month 1 of MY70 production, and from what I can gather the change-over to blue plates may have actually been a little before the MY change-over, as the change to blue plate occurred after ZZZ 999 was issued on the black plates, which might actually been just prior to end of MY69 production for most makes.
If you can trace it's original California licence plate, you can work out whether it was black or blue from the plate, but I would say its 98% certain yours would have been on the new blue plates.

Edit:

Just to prove myself wrong this is supposed to be an original black plate California Challenger, so, by default yours could be a black plate car. You'll get away with black plates on a UK car, likely get a tug with blue ones.

Great info thanks. I have no idea how to find the original plate of my car. I emailed Chrysler's historic division but they could only comment on MY68 and earlier. Do you have any idea how I could find my car's history?

States Plates are just generic 'USA style', rather than 'original era' reproductions.
All depend what you are after, or how anal and geeky you are

I'm hoping for ones as close as possible to actual black plates. I think States Plates are more for show plates, or for more modern vehicles.

Quite likely mine was actually on blue plates originally, but they probably won't look as good and attract more unwanted attention!

Having read this thread I decided to order some black plates too.

Just to let you know, the checkout wasn't working when I tried. I've sent them a message but have not received a reply yet.

I was going to be ordering my 1956 plates from them in April......
