PORSCHE FANS AND EXPERTS LOOK THIS WAY !
Discussion
A guy wants a fast car, has had quite a few rapid ones in his time, but fancies getting a 911 for the first time.
What does he get?
He isn't bothered about classic status, originality, or whether 'only 7 of this model were ever made with yellow upholstery', or whatever!
It is purely down to what the car can go out and DO. Performance counts big time to this fella.
Budget of around £40-45 grand, in great condition.
993 (non-turbo) won't have enough bhp, so what else?
993 (turbo) seems collectable already and prices steep.
Any thoughts, guys?
996?

you don't say if he's happy with lhd or not or what his main uses will be. If a track day toy then GT3 or 993RS at that price in lhd or rhd 964RS. If a road car any 964 turbo 3.6 maybe if rhd or 993 turbo in lhd. horses for courses. Don't discount a modified version either. BTR ruf etc availiable at this sort of money and less.just my choices everyone will have there fav's
Buying a RHD 964RS for his first 911 may put him off for life (or kill him if he's really unlucky) so i'd advise against it.
A 996 for that sort of money IS a fast car, it just doesn't FEEL that fast because it's so civilised.
For weekends and road use only in RHD i think i'd go for the 964 Turbo (also known as the 965), in either 3.3 form (leaving money for a bit of "work") or a mint 3.6 (standard).
IMHO of course.

Not enough money on the table I'm afraid if you are sticking to RHD and want spectacular performance. As you intend to stick to the roads , you might as well get a normal 996, which is still a fast car even if its the cooking model. Good chassis good brakes comfortable and can be chucked about without biting back....
If it were me , I'd go for a Mk1 GT3 in LHD . Its a bit stiff and doesn't like sleeping policemen or car ferry ramps ....but will certainly reward a sporting driver. Clear evidence of race breeding. ? 50k needed

Well I can only give you the benefit of personal experience, and I may well get flamed....... BUT
I spent £40k of my own money, which (trust me) took a LONG time to save, on a 2000 996 Carrera 2.
Bought from OPC with Warranty. 30k miles. Full history serviced every 5000 miles at the same dealer, each service 10 months after the other. Just had its 48k service at 28k miles. Every invoice neatly folded and in chronological order etc etc etc (last owner worse than me, clearly, which is saying sommat.)
Now, I KNOW I paid top whack and I KNOW that they have a fat fat fat margin, but hey, I wanna play safe with my own money - I am tight like that.
170mph. Lovely howl. No worries over blow ups.
A PEACH
A life enhancing experience. Anyway, my advice is this.
Buy the best you can.
Buy with a PORSCHE WARRANTY! A new engine is £11k. Can you spend the next few years worried every time you nail it? It would spoil the experience for me waiting for a rattle and a bang when I stretch its legs.
Good luck. You will NOT regret it. I promise you that.

I personally prefer a Porsche to be left hand drive, coz that's the way it was designed in the first place. Always some form of compromise when it's made to be right hand drive.
With a budget of 45K and looking for a 'performance' 911, you might stretch to a Mk 1 996 GT3, not sure if it would be low miles though. Like those cars a lot, should hold its value, definitely a drivers machine.
Looking a bit older, and maybe better condition for the price, a 993RS is a very special car. Possibly a bit of a slow burner from owner comments I've heard. Just grows and grows on you the more you drive it, until you realise this is one of the greatest road cars produced by the Porsche stable. Of course you want a Clubsport spec, but doesn't everyone.
Then you go as far back as the 964RS. Below budget, unless you go for the N/GT aka Clubsport.
But I reckon a look at a 993RS could be the way to go.

RIGHT. DECIDED.
I fancy a 993 Turbo, then. Seen a nice one at Hendon Way Motors, but it is over £50K, which is silly money for a 10-year-old car. With 10-year-old components.
Are these air-cooled?
If so, are there overheating issues, when faced with whatever power they have?
Must be approaching 400 bhp?

You can't fault the quality of his cars (especially the mint dark blue 993 RS he's got in the front of the showroom
) but IMHO there's better deals to be had elsewhere.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
