Might be visiting family at the end of February, can anyone suggest an interesting route, 40-50 miles? I had a vague idea about going to the Theakstons Brewery but it would 140 mile round trip!

I can't be of any assistance I'm afraid. All of my cycling knowledge of Yorkshire is very Ripon-centric. That's a 120 mile round trip from Beverley, and all of my routes were west of the A1 too, and would add considerably more time/distance.

Do you have Strava? If so, hit the 'Route Creator' section, and switch on the 'Heatmap' option. Then explore the area around Beverley, as it'll show you all the cycling hotspots. It's not much advice really, but it's ever so slightly better than "going in blind"...

Best direction is to head North/North West into the Wolds from Beverley as the surrounding area is pretty flat. If you head out towards Cherry Burton - Etton - South Dalton and then head towards Malton via Thixendale, you'll venture down some VERY quiet roads. You could do a 50 - 70 miler and head back that way ... there's plenty of decent climbs around Thixendale and Kirby Underdale if you fancy those.

Yes, head towards Malton or, as above towards the west of Malton around wharram Percy / thixendale / garrowby hill

Plenty of options for a scenic 50 with nicely varied terrain

Shout up nearer the time if you want some to ride out with, might be able to make it work for at least part of the route

Thanks everyone, looks like Malton is the best bet! I had thought about going to Flamborough Head, but I guess the wind at the end of February could be off the scale out there?

Its just a bit of a flatish route out there, much more interesting terrain towards Malton.

Agreed - roads all fairly similar around that way - it's quite bleak. Personally I'd drive the 30mins to Huggate from Beverley and do a loop with:

Sledmere, Wharram le Street, Birdsall, Kirkham Priory, Thixendale, Millington Dale

The Sustrans map is a pretty decent guide to the better roads in the Wolds:
