Evo 7 vs Chim 4.0
Discussion
Straight line away from the lights, I didn't exactly leave him for dead, but destroyed him from 0-40, after that he started clawing back, but we hit about 90 and then the speed limit dropped from NSL to 40
Gave him a big thumbs up as he pulled in behind me on the single carriageway, but the miserable sod just ignored me

Thing is with all these 4WD nutter wagons, you need to really be brutal and virtually drop the clutch to get away quickly. Not nice if you're paying the maintenance bills. Fine if you're a road test journo. Just remember how 'rough' you had to be with the TT to get it to shift off the line - with a Rover V8 TVR you just stroll off on a wad of torque with minimal wheelspin (4.0L anyway).
This is one thing I miss about moving to a Speed Six, oh and the V8 burble.

He probably didn't notice you!
No offence chap, but our cars were designed 12 years ago, and not much developed since. They're stunning, but if an EVO VII was trying, you wouldn't be posting your experience here tonight.
It's not a put-down, honestly. I just think that threads like this are a bit counter-productive. Having seen how Gazboy's MR2, or SDewey's MX5, or Smiffy's P1 performed at VMax, it just goes to show what continuous development can achieve.
Those cars really can compete with ours. I still feel like a goddess in the Griff though. That's one thing that I haven't seen surpassed, except possibly by simonspider's Murcielago.

Oh he was trying allright. I was watching him in my mirror, could hear the turbo and wastegate thingy chattering away madly, like I said he was clawing his way back before we had to drive sensibly again.
Maybe he just wasn't a great driver, but I think I may have deflated his ego slightly
He probably hasn't come across many other cars that can give him a run for his money.

If you have a 400(as opposed to a 500?) the reason "the miserable sod ignored you" is you were the only one that knew you were having a race.

I tend to agree.
the 4 litre is definately *not* a fast car these days. He was probably just waiting for his turbo to warm up, teh 40mph limit came to your rescue just in time .. he was about to whip your ass mate.
some day you're just gonna have to face it .. the Chim is a dated slow car, but we love them anyway for their grin factor against the evo elastictrickery .. but don't fool yourself into thinking you've got a quick car by modern standards.
Not sure I agree with 'not a fast car'
Its a damm site faster than my Mondeo
Thing is its very easy to get it to go fast without all the bother of Turbo's, gear changing, wheel spin, 8 zillion rpm.
The 4's not got enough torque that you have to be really careful with, but is got enough to not really worry about what gear your in - i.e floor it and off u go, no hassles and no worries. EVO man probably got caught off boost and in the wrong gear, tut tut! - but all that high tech trickery is no good if you don't know how to use it

I don't understand the put downs on the Chims performance in this thread. For the 4 litre the owners manual claims sub 5s to sixty and sub 13s to 100. Autocar's figures aren't far off this and other road test mags have bettered these. The figures I have seen for Evo 7 are pretty similar hence PoD's claim of quite an even match. Around the corners might be a different story though....
How any car which can crack 60 in around 5 seconds can be described as slow is beyond me.

I've driven a mates EVO Tommy Makkinen special edition (OK, it's a VI, but similar performance to a VII I think). I went alright, but ultimately didn't feel any quicker than my Chimaera. Lots of zoom on boost, and reasonably fun to drive. The boost gives you more feeling of acceleration in the EVO than you get with the lazy V8 of the Chimaera. Not as hard to drive as I thought (naturally didn't try any full bore getaways).
Obviously come to a bend and the EVO was better.

Plus Mr Evo probably had 200kg of sub woofer and a huge stack of 'classic driving trax'cd's weighing him down.
probably not so much those CDs as "Bo, Sorted 2 da max, Innit Vol 1"

Yep, that statement had me a bit confused... I still think the 4 litre version is very fast (and that's coming from someone who's daily drive is > 600bhp).
I would have thought a chimaera would spank an Evo off the lights from 0-40. From personal experience I haven't been particularly impressed with the initial acceleration of the evo.
In an "off the lights race", i certainly wouldnt put any money on a turbo rigged, electronic controlled car with lag and hesitation (at least until the computer sorts out what's going on).
It may be that some people hear the word "evo" and wet themselves as to the fancy electronics and chipped up bollox under the hood.

If its a standard EVO VIII he has 260 Japanese horses, which I are about 234 good old fashioned english ones. I would expect a healthy 4.0 Chim to see off a standard EVO to say 80 mph.
234 bhp and big transmission losses in the 4wd and a heavier car.
Dont let any one try and tell you that a 4.0 Chim is slow.
