Dear readers

I am looking at possibly buying a second hand VW Touareg V6 TDI for my family for ideally under £10k with as low mileage as possible.

These cars seem quite good value than a lot of other rival German 4x4 cars and wondered if anyone has owned one and if they can suggest any helpful tips/reviews.

Does the V6 TDI engine have a DPF and if it does, I am worried that it could cause problems! The car will mainly be used on shorter journeys 2-3 days a week.

Many thanks.

Low miles + low usage = just get that V6 petrol Porsche you were asking about.

The Touareg V6 TDI is fantastic and we kept ours longer than any other car.

The Mk1 and Mk2 are the ones to go for with the 3.0TDI. Remember VW designed these is pre recession times to be the best 4x4 on the market. The build quality is immense and that why it weighs 2.4 ton.
the Mk3 and Mk4 (I think 2010 onwards) are cutdown versions. Faster rand more economical because there lighter. To shed 300kg of weight they removed more industrial parts of the car from area VW though were important when money was no object.........

Back to Mk1 and 2, their sisters the Porsche Cayenne and Q7 are slightly more upmarket but way uglier and less capable off road and more importantly you wont look a c**k driving one.

Things to look out for -
Make sure all tyres are the same and look for the tale tale signs its been well looked after.
full history
Get Nav and Leather

Main issues. Propshaft failure around every 70K miles - Make sure the propshaft bearings (common item for Q7 Cayenne Touareg) are replaced and this will prevent premature failure. <£100 item of ebay but get a specialist to fit. £250-£400 Job. VW will only replace prop shaft at £1500 :-(

Also the gear boxes and prone to failure. So check smooth sifting from 4th - 5th and back down. Pot luck on these.

Although the build quality is great some of the dashboard plastic are a little less premium compared to ranger over, Q7 etc. So check all switches and intricate bits operate.
Remember heavy car so expect the associated running costs.

We did 25K miles in 4 years so mainly small journeys. Like the previous post a petrol would be better. However the 3.2v6 IMO struggles with the weight. The V8 ;-) is rare but if you find a good example then go for it.

Regards the DPF issue I believe this was on the 240bhp models. The 223bhp models didn't have DPF so I cant comment. However occasionally I would take if for an Italian tune up.

Look at the UK Toaureg forum. www.mytreg.com loads of info and help.

Look at as many as possible as there will be more rough ones than good.

Gearbox + propshaft as previously pointed out.

Owned a 2005 one several years ago, and it needed the propshaft doing, so had a specialist do that.

Had DPF issues, but thats down to the driving style, and managed to do regen it.

We had a Warranty Direct warranty on it, which when sold, was cancelled. A week after selling it, the buyer asked if it was still current, as he didn't want t transfer it, reason was, gearbox went on it. Valve chest failed, costing a few thousand pounds from memory.

Nice car to have, very smooth engine, but expensive when they go wrong, and they will.

Ok, thank you for your comments, they were really helpful. The DPF issues are a concern as like you point out, they are expensive to fix! I will mainly be doing shorter journeys - which is not ideal for a diesel which has a DPF!

In your opinion is having the Warranty Direct worth it? I thought there are so many clauses with those warranties, that whenever something goes wrong it is more likely not to be covered under the warranty. I see AA do a warranty cover too. Perhaps for these big cars it is worth it having to help save you large costs when something like the gear box (assuming that is covered) goes wrong!

On that age of vehicle it wasn't worth it as we had to bay something like a 50% contribution to parts, so given the cost of it, can't remember exactly how much, but it wasn't worth it.

Had a warranty direct policy on a 2010 discovery recently, that needed a £2300 gearbox repair and was covered in full, so that was certainly worth it.

It's all relevant to age and mileage of car as to what level of cover the will give you.

What year are you looking at?

Get on mytreg forum as that was a gold mine for me.

We never took warranty out and never have on 2nd hand car. Have a slush fund of a couple of grand just in case. If you never need it happy days!!
We have 05 reg 3.0tdi - purchase 2011 sold 2015. No problems. Nothing
I spent £400 on the preventative profshaft bearing replacement. 4 New General grabber GT tyres.
But this is why you need to view and drive as many as possible. Look for private buyers who have looked after them. The Forums may have ones for sale from enthusiast.
These are great cars and are starting to get a good following from
