I've not been on a VMAX - it sounds like a great event, run by and attended by a great bunch of people.

A question - do any of the cars (and if so, how many) reach Vmax at Brunters - surely the runway is not long enough?

I'm just curious.

No its not Vmax Joe,i think another mile would be needed to achieve true Vmax.
Guy would surely be around the 210 mark........

Rods is right, most of the cars won't reach true maximum in the circa 1.5 miles we have available. This is clear by comparing the speeds reached with the quoted top speeds for the standard cars.

Thats why the manufacturers test top speeds at Nardo and Ehra-Lessien etc where they have much longer straights or huge high-speed bowls.

There were probably at least half a dozen cars there that could do over 200mph on a long enough roads (3 x Rufs, several of the tuned 996TT/GT2s, Lambo Murcie etc)

For what it's worth on my particular car, it hits the rev-limiter (hard) easily in top gear, which equates to about 206mph. Ruf fit a longer 6th gear if desired (I declined) and their demo RTurbo with the same engine as mine has gone 223mph on GPS. A Yellowbird (Ruf CTR) did 211mph as long ago as 1987........

I would say most of the top cars were probably at circa 15-20mph from reaching their actual top speeds. Although these cars are still accelerating at 190mp, they cover so much ground whilst doing so that each extra mph takes a longer distance.

The top speed of the VX is 136mph according to Vauxhall.

I saw 130 consistantly through the traps all day but apparently 135 in the stats. At that point accelleration was so slow I'd have needed a lot more runway (miles!) or some kind of following wind.

Aye Rob, I was asking him when he might sell it. No time soon it seems.

PS.....I went to see Helen Boulding play live tonight in Newcastle. I told her you know her parents.

The Ultima hits vmax about 1/3 down the runway at 160 and 6400 rpm. Needs a sixth gear!

Rods/Johnny,

Everything's for sale at the right price

Then I could get Ruf to build me a really fast car.......

Seriously though it's difficult to see what could offer the same performance and practicality for the money. There's a big leap in price to the next car up (CGT/Enzo/F1). For that reason I think this car will be a keeper.

A little O/T Guy, but is the engine in the RT 12 based on the 997 or 996 TT engine? If it’s the 996 is there any possibility you could have the full 650 treatment in the furture? Which would mean maybe ~670 on the dyno? Maybe Herr Ruf would make grafting elephant’s testicles on to the driver a compulsory part of the upgrade?

As another aside, I have been wondering too how much speed my GT2 wing robs from my laser speed….maybe 2-3 mph?

Even some of the lowlier stuff needs a bit more room to max out. My little Alfa peaked at 142 indicating a little over 150 on the speedo. I've seen the speedo run out of numbers before now (its marked up to 160), so there's at least another 10mph or so available given enough room, which agrees with the manufacturer's claims pretty much spot on.

We hit VMAX in the VX220 Turbo. Had 143 twice but consistently 142 for loads of runs.

Last time in the 456 I hit 160 consistently but then ran out of room just as the auto box changed into top gear. Should get 180 with more space.

Strictly speaking its not VMAX but its as close as you are going to get in a legal environment in the UK...

Ahem...However we do know that it does go faster, eh Pete?

Oops edited to add: read the last bit properly. Still... Anything off the clock counts as VMax in my book...

Agreed it's not 'true' VMAX, but it's a darn good indication of whats possible with your car. Ok the last few mph aren't avialbale as you'd need a 10 mile runway for a lot of the cars to really feel that they'd done everything possible...

I figure I should have another 15mph or so in the car and it feels likely, but it would need a couple more miles to find it!

in all seriousness I've looked into hiring longer places but either dont allow bookings or ridiculously expensive.

I'd put the timing beams further down but until the ruf boys get some proper brakes or maybe parachutes then there's no point.

Please, no further down the straight as I had problems stopping even at a far lower speed than the ruf guys. New brakes for next time though

Indeed; there's more left in the NSX, just not at Brunters. With the 5 speed box the gap between 4th and 5th *just* drops out of VTEC and it takes a while to climb back into the zone - at 150mph+ quite a bit of ground is covered getting there.
