samsung tv- picture but no sound?

switched on my tv yesterday (Samsung 42" UE42F5000AK aprox 4/5 yrs old) and I'm getting a picture as normal but no sound. tried all the stuff I could on google (switch off, change hdmi leads, check settings...) but still cannot get a sound.

I tried both hdmi connections/ different hdmi leads, my bt tv box, apple tv box, kodi and xbox..... all giving pictures normally, but not a single bit of sound. the strange thing is I get sound if I go to the menu and run a 'sound test', but nothing coming through the speakers from the hdmi source.

is this terminal?? anyone any ideas??

Does the sound work when produced from the TV itself, e.g. from the inbuilt apps and/or the digital tuner? Try that and if it doesn't work see if the headphone jack works. If the jack works but speakers do not they are either muted or switched off in a sound menu somewhere or broken I guess.
