Ticket from abroad arrived in UK???
Discussion
Query?? I read SPL but don't normally contribute as I don't know the ins and outs enough to make a decent contribution.
However, I received a message from the g/f saying that a letter came through from what looks like the Spanish ministry of something. It's in Spanish and her translation is likely ropey so bear with me.
It says that I was doing 135 in a 100 limit. It got the correct car I believe (rental car) and I was in the area at the time. I don't know who was driving though as there were 3 of us on the insurance. My name was the first on the rental agreement.
The letter just says something along the lines of going to a Post Office to pay 140 Euro fine but the g/f can't figure out if there is a reply address or phone number to query it. I should also add that even though it has just arrived it is from when I was there six months ago.
It sounds partly fishy to me and I would be tempted to bin it but a neighbour had to sign for it so if it was binned then they would know it had been delivered.
Anybody else know anything about these things or had something similar?
She is going to scan the letter and email it to me as I am out the country just now.
Cheers
Andy

There was a scam reported last year involving UK residents hiring motors in Spain and Italy on return being presented with a bill for speeding. Very official letter but funds went into a scroats account.
In a Hiring agreement for a Rental car there is generally a clause to the effect when the Hiring Company receives, as first point of contact, a penalty notice from an authority, it will debit the Credit Card. So this tends to confirm scam.
In any case if this was true, legislation is not yet in (but coming) that offences outside UK can be dealt with as having been committed in the UK. Sure as hell they are not going to implement Extradiction procedures for a simple offence but they could keep the drivers name on file and if coming to the notice again abroad, act.
If I get time I will see if I can find details of the scam.

I read that post but I wasn't quite sure if it was still going on and it didn't have any details about the letter.
TBH I was thinking it was a con as the g/f didn't see any return address on it.
It does seem like a lot of trouble to get that sort of amount out of me but it does have the area right (it wasn't where I was staying).

Does the letter come from "Medio de Corte Credito Recoudado Estorbar Exigir" (MCCREE) or "Deuda Recaudar Alguacil y Exigir Servicios" (DRAYES)? If so it's a definite scam.
129 euros fine plus sundry court costs? Surprised it's still going since the OFT issued warnings last August.

The plot thickens so to speak....
The g/f says shes a bit daft at the moment. There was an address/phone number on the envelope. It comes from the Interior Minister (or his office at least) in Granada.
I checked the DGT website for there and the address and phone number matches so it looks like it is legit.
She is going to scan it and email to me so I can read it.
It still seems a bit strange to go to all this time and effort to prise less than 100 quid out of me. Maybe their local council cutbacks are even worse than ours!!!

I get these every time I rent a car in Holland.
I got 2 on my last trip.
1 for 106km in a 100km limit, 1 for 103km in a 100km limit.
It was vertically filed, the same way all the others have been over the last few years.
If anything ever comes of it, 'I didn't understand what the letters were about'
I mean who the hell speaks dutch anyway (apart from the dutch and a few dodgy african nations)

Bugger B & C you've a better filing system than mine.
Self and a friend been searching for the information and traced and falls in line what is stated. Medico de Corte one signed by Juan Calrlos Jemenex.
Reported June time last year.
Have a word with Trading Standards as they were reportedly collating such incidents with a view to trying to get the Spanish Authorities to take some action to stop.

Ok, after reading the letter it is definately a legitimate ticket.
It has some details of the offence but it looks like they got me on a speed gun rather than camera.
It says a load of stuff about traffic law and what part of the code it relates to.
It then says that if I pay within 15 days I will get a 30% reduction (why thank you) but if I don't pay then procedures will start.......
Here's the best part.... to pay I have to go to a Post Office (in Spain obviously) and do a Giro credit to the Interior Ministers office. Alternatively, I should stop a policeman in Granada and show him this letter and he will let me pay cash.
Ah well, I guess they can wait till the next time I am over there.
