Rev Counter Improved, but not right

I'm getting some unusual reponse from the rev counter.

Previously it never registered anything over 2000 rpm and from replies to an earlier post I've taken the dash panel out and created an additional earth to the door pillar.

Although I haven't road tested (seat and steering not attached)it now appears to register higher. However when the revs drop the gauge doesn't return properly. Claiming an idle of 1500 rpm, when it's audibly under 1000 rpm. The needle does appear to be sluggish.

It's a 81/82/83 280 with the Stewart Warner gauges.

Any clues would be appreciated. I'm aiming to get it reassembled and sorted for the wedge race at Brands on the 16th.

Check the bulb holder is not pushed in too far as on some the bulb can touch the back of the face and push it forward so that it touches the needle.

Sent the rev counter off to Autotek / Speedo Jim near Northampton a fortnight ago. When I eventually caught up with him to get a response, he said one of the integrated circuits had blown and the whole internal needed replacing. Quoted me £90 for the job. I suggested that £30-50 was more like it, he later came back with £50 to replace just one of the components (no surprise he went to the top of my suggested amount), if he could get the parts. On his advert he states 'prompt service when posssible', in retrospect that's a pretty meaningless statement.

I've retrived it now, to send to John Ostick in Keighley (www.jdo1.com), whose quoted a fixed price of £35 for the job. I was going to use him originally, but I pass through Northampton most weeks, so could visit Autotek to collect.

Annoyingly I missed out on the Tasmin being broken just up the road in Peterborough, that had the right instruments.
