How much should one allow for maintenance costs over that of a non-turbo 993? Is it in a different league altogether?

I've had my car 18-19 months now. Done 10 track days and 5,000 road miles. Only expense has been tyres (two sets), brake pads, normal service (£500 at parr) and an oil change (£250 at parr).

Cheap as chips!

Oh, i've just noticed you have a 964 - so did I.

A 993 turbo is like running a fiesta after a 964!

Normal driving sees 22mpg, economy driving can manage up to 35mpg, track 11mpg.

Enjoy!

Until something goes wrong in engine bay area of car! That £250 oil change cost gives you a clue!

Alan doesn't mind though as he's got the UK light market sewn up

I think it depends on luck to a degree.

If you buy a good 993 Turbo and get lucky it will be cheap to run. If you are unlucky, you could need engine work and that isn't cheap.

My mate Mark who I went to Vmax with has a 993 Turbo. His name on here is Bod911. He has just had a top end rebuild and reconditioned turbos on his 90K mile car. This wasn't cheap, but a lower mileage car wouldn't need this you would hope. You could e-mail him for a warts and all picture of running these cars.

This is true as I'm also aware of couple of low mileage cars that have required £10K of engine fettling to make them right. I guess condition condition condition.

I think a car that's in top condition but has been used every day (and has the mileage to match) is a good bet.
These cars like to be used regularly, not left for days or weeks at a time. Any custodian of a 993TT who can use the car often and still keep it in tip top shape is probably a good place to start.
Alan, comments?

The turbo replacement at that mileage was unlucky from what I've heard elsewhere on their longevity - there ARE owners out there with 120k miles on the original turbos ALLEGEDLY. I seem to remember Mark telling me at the previous VMax that the car had previously lived on a farm and got driven back and forth along a muddy track - the mud had accumulated on the bodies of the turbos so they rusted really badly. Could maybe be classed as exceptional wear and tear..

Alan - what the hell's going on with that oil change price???

The car's oil capacity is around 13 litres isn't it?? My 4 litre tubs of Mobil 1 motorsport 15W/50 cost less than 30 quid, so that's around 100 quid's worth of top quality oil.

Labour and disposing of the old oil cost £150?? Is there something crazy about draining the old oil on a 993TT that I don't know about??

Er, it's from the top of my head! I've just checked and that price included a service kit and bits - sorry! Probably should have been more like £100!

A good place to look is at http://forums.rennlist.com which has enough information to distract you from owning one for many years.

phew - me that nearly gave me a heart attack. Obviously now with the supercharger I reckon the best route to engine longevity is to replace the oil a lot more frequently than I have historically. At that price it would have been more economical to have two normal services a year!!!

Don't think its in a different league really. It will use more fuel, and go through tyres and brakes quicker. Service costs are higher, and bits like brake pads and discs cost more to replace. If you don't track it lots then it shouldn't cost loads more than a N/A 993 to run.

Lots of info can be found here:

www.993tt.com

Kind Regards

MOD.

Mail me off line if you want more specific info on costs. There are some costs in my car profile also.
