CAT C Recorded on Previous private plate
Discussion
Hi
I bought a car around a year ago from a dealer, before looking at it, I had HPI Vehicles checks done against the registration, which all came back clear.
Im now selling the car and a friend who is interested has run a check on the car (they work for a well known car rental firm) they have discovered that it was recorded as a CATC write off when it had a private plate previously (around 6 months before i purchased it back on its original plate)
I am confused as to why the CAT C is now not showing up when you run a check, is it not linked to the vehicle and just the number plate?
When i purchased the car from the dealer it was not advertised as CAT C, but im sure if I challenge the dealer, they are likely to just say that it was CAT C clear on the plate they sold it to me...
Im in the process of seling the car privately at the moment, and am aware that I do not need to disclose this, but find it odd that the private plate seems to mask the CAT C showing up?

If the private plate was allocated on another car in the past (as they all have been) it may well be that one and not yours which has the accident history. You need to get the full details of the Cat C designation and the background to that.I bought a car around a year ago from a dealer, before looking at it, I had HPI Vehicles checks done against the registration, which all came back clear.

In my experience if you do a full HPI check it should give the date when the Cat C marker was applied to the private plate and also the dates when the private plate was on the car. That data may even be on the check that has flagged up the marker already.
If the date of the cat C wasn't when the private place was on the car then it doesn't apply to the car.
If the date of the cat C wasn't when the private place was on the car then it doesn't apply to the car.
Ive done some more digging and after running another HPI check, i have worked out whats happened
Private plate changed in 2010
Vehicle then changed ownership in 2011 (im assuming the private plate would have stayed with the person selling)
Further ownership changes in 2013, and when I bought in 2015
CAT C against private plate recorded in 2015 (when private plate would have been on a different car)

Not quite true !If any would be purchaser was to ask the question....."as the vehicle ever been the subject of an insurance loss " you must disclose this.
If any would be purchaser does not do an HPI check or ask the above question, then they deserve all they get.

The subsequent investigations undertaken by the OP confirms that the vehicle he is selling has not been subject to a total loss though. If any would be purchaser was to ask the question....."as the vehicle ever been the subject of an insurance loss " you must disclose this.
