multi room audio/TV

I broached this briefly about 10 months ago when I applied for planning for my self build 'grand design' house...
...and after many arguments, letters and re-designs, 10 months later (this morning in fact) I GOT PLANNING PERMISSION!
I know some of you are into all this... so if you have time, some advice. Ta
By the way... first thing I shoud say is that the house is 5 hours drive north of Glasgow in the north west Highlands, which may alter companies that are willing to do 'on site' work.
I'm after audio in about 5 zones... switchable - and TV from a sky dish, also in 5 zones. What's the best way to do this? I know you are probably going to say wireless, but 1/ I don't want a computer based system and 2/ I can put all the wires in before the walls are plastered, which will cost peanuts...

I guess with the av stuff it depends on budget as with anything.
Lots of people rubbish Bose, I had it put through most of my house as its not mentally expensive, sounds good, is simple to use, you can have multi zones ie, you watch a dvd in one room while kids listen to music upstairs. And they do surround sound etc. The new ones have hard drives & dvd as well.
I have a couple of plasmas & lcd's as well which link in to it all.
Yamaha do a good multi room system with all the music on mp3 and you have a touch panel in each room to control it & choose music etc.
These are reasonably basic systems & the sky is the limit dependant on budget, hey, you'll have a lot of fun whatever you choose.
By the way, x10 remote lighting etc is simple to install too if you're interested in taking things further.

Liszt... July/August - we can't open windows due to midges, and believe it or not it get's blimmin hot up there from time to time... hence - air con!

I'm (still) doing a restoration and have many of the same problems
I think I'm going to go with 'pooters. I've got cat 5 running round the house now and an access point in the loft (I did like the idea of accessing my complete music collection from the garden)
I think the computer option is good because you only have data cables running round. Long runs of line level cable isn't a good idea IMHO and long runs of speaker cable is unpractical too

Might be worth getting a few copies of "Grand Designs" magazine. A good few trade ads in the back.

As a matter of interest I'm down in the Lake District at present, so if you'd had knocked (up north), I'd have been out. (Actually some of my boozy mates are there having an Easter jolly at present... and now they know it's going to be knocked down I guess they'll trash it good and propper.

If i know which one your house was i'd have knocked. Was keeping an eye and ear out for rampaging RS6 but heard nothing, then got buzzed by three RAF jets at about 100feet (pardon?). Took about 300 photos and got about 6 decent ones, (making an appearence in a photography forum near you soon folks).

Give Alex at Hi-Fi corner a call, and also try the boys at Glasgow Audio on Gt Western Rd - both of these operations have been good in advising and also supplying stuff for me and although not on as grand a scale as yours they knew their stuff. I'm depserately trying to recall the name of the company that did my friends home cinema...
Where is the house going to be? Will I pass it on ym way to Skye?

Ta mate... good stuff.
House is in the Torridon area... 'bout 100 miles north of Fort William... so an hour or so from the Skye bridge. I have an existing property there, which I'm replacing with the new build.
If you're ever up that far north, chuck us an e mail and we can share a wee dram.

I currently have a small one in the current place based around Logic 6 and somw outboard. I would be specifically very intested in the structure/soundproofing/acoustic treatment [/shameless hijack]

Ah i know where you are, some fantastic roads and scenery up there! I was up last week actually but it wasn't a good trip, going up again on monday for a few days' rest! Anyway my mum has some good contacts up that way to do with building so drop me a mail if you need anything.
If you do put cat5 in (like d'uh) put a decent amount of runs into every room. It's a bit crap to find you've run out and need a switch cluttering the place up...
(My sparky only put one run into each room, despite my asking for two. It's awkward and compromised, but not impossible, to do ethernet + composite & L+R audio. Better to have too much...)
I'd also be tempted in potential AV areas to get speaker & line level cables run around the walls with breakouts in strategic places. Hindsight , hindsight...
