As I understand it, it's 3 points/£60 fine for minor speeding offences, but only a £30 fine/no points for having mud etc coating your number plate/broken plate so it's unreadable? Therefore, does anyone know where you'd stand if you got caught using one of these:

www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/priva.htm

Although unfortunately the company is no longer trading.

I thought there was only a £30 fine where no number plate was present (per end). A plate that is there but obscured attracts a £60 fine & 3 points iirc. There was a post on here somewhere about it about a month ago I think.

you get fined more for having a dirty/obscured plate than no plate at all

30 quid for no plate, up to a grand and points for an obscured one (afaik)

You get fined the same as we can issue a £30 fine for no plate, or dirty plate or any other plate offences. But if reported for summons then you could get alot more.. You can be reported if the plate is not present, dirty or any plate offence (in reality the offence is failing to display a registration mark regardless of if its missing or dirty)

Im not aware of being able to give points for obscured plates but one of the traffic lads will be able to answer that one.

As I understand it, and it's from research due to using some of our vehicles on the farm, i.e. covered in mud..

No number plate max £30 fine.

Obscured plate max £1000 fine.

So, it's better to say it must have fallen off than to have it obscured by anything!

When it's in the down position...ie: displaying number plate...

NO OFFENCE whatsoever...

If it's in the up position...ie: blank...offences are:

1) Fail to display number plate
2) Going equipped to steal (arrestable)
3) Pervert course of justice (arrestable)...

I await the heated responses......:box:

I got a 30 quid fine no points for mine. im guessing thats correct.
athough traffic did warn me, that cameras (congestion zone) wont be able to read it. Now does that come under obscured or other?

So i assume with standard plates and not the fancy flip plates etc then obscured plates or altered plates will fall into 1 2 and 3??

Handy to know... Learn something new everyday. Cheers street.

So can one imply from this that plates on the dash or parcel shelf might b a pull but no offence?

Not so in my book edc. Regulations are pretty specific as to how displayed and parcel shelf or front facia is not so.

Incidentally the max fine for non display or obscure is not 30 pounds but 1,000 pounds.

Those of you that have been reading will know that the country is about to be swamped with APNR cameras so no number plate/obscured will be an automatic pull.

Thanks. I was just asking for those cars standard or modified that do not have fixings for plates.

I remember reading here that one PH'er has the front plate on the back of the sunvisor - which would seem to contravene regs.

You've got to be joking!

I'll be done for "going equiped to murder with a pair of shoe laces" next.

If you need to trump up charges like that to fill your quotas you'll lose all my respect, and a lot of other peoples too I expect.

Martin.

As i've said before Martin...if you mean ME with the respect comment...I won't lose ANY sleep whatsoever if people lose respect for me due to what I write on here. In fact, people shouldn't really 'respect' me at all on here...they don't know me and what I write could be lies anyway...

As for going equipped to steal...What's wrong with it then matey?
I locked up a bloke recently who had removed the rear number plate from his vehicle (it was in the boot, with the rusty screws and a screwdriver)...

Would you believe it....I'd not been in the custody suite more than half an hour when I learn that HE and HIS CAR had done a 'drive off' from a petrol station about 20 mins prior to me arresting him...

doesn't always work as lucky as that, I hasten to add

Well done with that SC.
A friend had a problem recently. He went to Scotland for a short holiday and one morning at the hotel he noticed his front plate was snapped in half and only one half was attached to the vehicle, the other had disappeared. He doesn't know whether someone deliberately snapped it off, or whether it broke. He can't remember hitting an animal, but then, how often do you check to see if your plate is still affixed?
The problem was that the local garage would/could not make up a replacement plate without him producing the V5 and two different forms of ID, one of which had to be a utility bill. Now, you just don't take that sort of documentation with you on holiday (well, I certainly don't).
So he drove home to N. London with only half a front plate. Would you have arrested him for 'going equipped....' or 'attempting to pervert....'?
Years ago the response would have been to tell you that it was broken and to get a new one as soon as possible. With the current camera obsession who knows what sort of trouble you could be in just because, perhaps, someone cracks your front plate by reversing into it very slowly in a car park and causes it to break in half.
Is this the new 'control freakery' in action?

I'd love to know what on earth a camera is going to do about "no plate". Automatic pull? Pull who, exactly?

my inspector has develope a Herbert Lom style twitch whenever someone mentions my surname, i'm told....He spends a lot of time fielding complaints
