I requested the DVLA put a small selection of number plates forward for auction a while ago. Ive now had the letter through to tell me that one of the plates I wanted is coming up soon...

Now I would really love this plate and it would fulfill a bit of a dream for me but Im not sure Im going to be able to justify the cost

How much would you guess this plate will sell for: Reserve is £600 for starters...

If there are two people in the room who want it, then who knows. However, in my limited experience, I would be surprised if you didn't pick it up for reserve or a couple of bids over.

A911 TBO was sold by the DVLA for £8000. It was then put up for sale for £40,000! It's still up for sale now I believe (last seen on ebay)

I can think of one chap on this forum with a (possibly ficticious) 964 RS that may be interested in this plate.

How does one go about doing this? I've got a few plates i'd be interested in (well, anything ending 4LEC really) but can't find any suitable ones on their site or at a brokers.

I guess it depends how many guys called Dom that own 911s fancy a plate with their name written on it.

You'd have to sell it yourself rather than via those crazy Reg Plate broker companies (who the hell pays 50k for a number plate? The USAians have it right, calling them 'vanity plates'...)

For example, my first 993 had the plate CAR 911X on it. I bought from an OPC, who said the plate wasn't part of the deal and I'd get a M or N plate when I picked up the car - I said 'good', I was 25 and didn't need to attract any more unwanted attention!! (in other words, I'd struggle to afford the insurance excesses if it got repeatedly vandalised....). The original owner didn't end up keeping the plate so it was there when I picked up the car.

Couldn't really be bothered to mess about with it (additional owners on V5, etc.) unless the plate was worth some cash, and as a plate for '911 Carrera' I thought it'd be worth a couple of hundred quid at least. The Reg Plate brokers said 'nah', after fees I'd probably get 50 quid or so, so I didn't bother.

As always, you may find a niche market that will pay more than you'd expect... how about advertising it on kinky sex websites, you may get some wealthy dominatrix wanting it for her car

Funny thing this plate lark. I put B14 CAR on a Carrera 4 for £200.

Sold it and had plate on retention, also put it with a couple of brokers. The week after I put it on another car I had a call from a broker to say that a Brenda Carr wanted it on her new MG. I said 500 quid for me min.....and got it!!

BTW 964RS is up for £25,000.......

I recently went to an auction with a mate.
99% of all plates went for at least double their reserve, most lots more.
AR53NAL went for nearly £40k !

For a 993 RS, I would want a "period" reg number, i.e. the M or N reg numbers.

Would you want a personlised reg on your 1973 911 RS? No, you wouldn't. You would want a reg that reflected the year your car was born in......you would want the rear plate in black as well.

I think 993 RSs are appreciating classics. They need M or N reg's attached to them to REALLY STRESS the year they were born. I thought about getting G1 RSR for a grand from the DVLA but I changed my mind. I'm sticking with my original M plate.
