Hey... wondering if the PH elite can give me some advice.

Im running a new laptop after my old one packed in. the upshot of this is that ive lost all my old music files. (despite backinf them up) It turns out sony sonic stage has some clever gubbins to stop you from transfering files from one computer to another. this is much to my frustration.

Are there any GOOD mp3 format (Not ATRAC as I now no longer like sony) ripper and and music file management software out there. I'm happy to pay if its the muts nuts.

Regards Chris H

Well you could use Windows Media Player V10. It's probably already on your laptop and it's free. I know some people hate M$ software just 'cos it's M$, but I find it works quite well.

FWIW I tend to use media player to rip but can recommend Steinberg Clean as a very useful tool for manipulating mp3 files (bitrate conversions etc). Also has the advantage of being able to link to an analogue source so you can mp3ise all your old vinyl/tapes should you have the time/patience/inclination.

Thanks for the help thus far. Not a big fan of the MS stuff. I dont like the interface/menu system.

Any audio engineers or software types out there?

Cheers

http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/ for ripping
www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts/ for manipulating

Stay away from MS apps as I hear to many stories of their copy protection / call home ness. I still run MP8 with up to date plugins...

I'm with Stefan. CDex for ripping and I recommend Foobar2000 for organisation www.foobar2000.com
Try the normal installer, since the 'special' installation is geek grade and confuses too much.

I've also heard about wxMusik from http://musik.berlios.de/ but haven't had a look myself yet. Looks interesting though.

I use audiograbber for ripping and encoding. Works fine for me.

Why convert? The MP101 plays .wma anyway.

And arguably (tin hit on) wma is a better compression system anyway.

Really?, I download all of my music from Napster and it comes out as a protected .wma file (I think), so how do I get the MP101 to play them?

Slightly off topic, what would be the best way to copy Mini Disks onto computer hard disk?
I'll be needing mp3's from now on.

Its a farirly ancient Sony MD player. (MZ-R55 circa 2000)
