As those who frequent the music section know, I have a number of guitars.

Local shop has a second hand guitar in that I like. I've bought loads of stuff from them over the last 30 years. Limited run, no longer produced so slowly going up in value. They have it on commission. I enquired about possibly trading in one of my guitars. Boss said drop it in and he'll look into it. Wasn't there when I dropped it off but left contact details and explanation with his business partner.

Following day get a Facebook message from boss man asking what I wanted him to do with my guitar he'd found in the shop. Explained again that ideally I'd like to trade against the one they're selling, but otherwise would like a guide price for commission sale on mine. Chased a coupe of days later, got a pretty low price for commission sale but he's "still working on a trade deal".

Couple of weeks have passed and I was in town so called in to chase it up. Found my guitar in the shop window... he hadn't been able to sort a trade so took it on himself to sell my guitar anyway.

I've messaged him this evening setting the minimum I'll accept from a sale, but I'm very unhappy that it's being sold at all without my permission. My minimum is £50 more than he suggested he could get for me, but would still leave him £150 in the deal if he gets asking price. Still tempted to ask for it to be returned to me.

Any thoughts?

TL/DR. Shop was asked for guide price for commission sale of guitar and started selling without my agreement

Would definitely not be letting him sell it on my behalf, in all honesty I'd be raging.

The whole deal has been very obscure so you can't blame the owner IMO. You are just as much to blame. Just contact him and say there's been some miscommunication and you want your guitar back.

Yup, sounds a bit like a vague instruction on your part. I don't think it would be reasonable to get angry since no money has changed hands.

If you were in the shop and was unhappy he was selling it why didn't you just take it back?

Seems to be endemic with music shops. All very laid back, er man, yea. Wouldn't be the one in Kings Road would it?

You were there, in the shop, your guitar for sale, the chap was there (I presume?) and you didn't have a conversation and sort it out there and then? rofl

Why?

Are you insane? have a conversation?!?!!! in this day and age! my good man it has to be a strongly worded text message! or maybe email but firstly he has to consult the internet people.

I collect guitars....Don't think the shop owner is been greedy with a £150 gross margin, most people will ask and get a discount when buying so he might be working for under £100...shops are expensive things to run.

Important you trust whoever you are doing business with, particualy on SOR

Two reasons I guess. Firstly I do want to sell it, but at a price I'm comfortable with. Secondly I've known the guys in that shop for a very long time and I wanted to check back on the messages we'd exchanged to be sure I was right rather than cause a scene.

But having looked back at the message trail there's very clearly nothing between him suggesting what I feel is too low a price and him putting it centre of his window display. I didn't agree to the price, or to the sale starting, and he's asking 1/3 more than he's offering to pay to me. I was still waiting on a price for him to buy it in to stock, but I fear cash flow might be an issue which makes me nervous about him having my gear with no agreement in place.

I've messaged him setting out my minimum price and will give it a couple of weeks then ask for it back.

So, in reality, you wanted someone here to tell you exactly how to deal with the situation, that you yourself would know best how to handle as you have known the people for a long time?

You, you mean actual face to face confrontation??? eek

That is what Facebook is for, don't you know? hehe

It does actually sound like a total misunderstanding with the time frame involved, and somewhat vague instructions to unknown employees. Swap, sell on commission, give me a quote, left in shop for weeks etc etc....
