I have an ache which feels a bit like the onset of cramp on the back of my leg half way between my butt and my knee. I'm worried that it could get in the way of my couch to 5k training which has caused it.

I'm doing the interval thing where you walk briskly for a while then jog for a while. I've been doing this every other night for the past 2 weeks and am gradually running further than I am walking. Last night I did 4.4 miles in 55 minutes so as you can see I'm only going moderately.

Before this I walked a lot and am relatively fit (50, non smoker play golf and shoot, that sort of thing) but needed something to help me tone up a bit and get a better level of fitness. So far so good, but I am concerned that when I go for my usual session tomorrow I'll do some harm if I have aggravated something.

Any ideas? Should I se a doctor or a physio to find out?

Sounds like you've strained it. I'm not fitness freak or medic, but I did the same long ago, ships medic told me it was quite common as it is a muscle many people hardly use in anger. I doubt a doctor will be able to tell you any more than I have.

Return to training, but just walk for a while rather than running.

Google hamstring stretch, try one very carefully. If it feels tight / sore....yes...it's your hamstring :-)

good advice here....don't "run through it"

Don't run until it's stopped hurting, your body doesn't know your doing a couch to 5k and it doesn't care.

A week off and you'll be fine you won't forget how to run.

If you carry on you'll put yourself even further back.

Do get a foam roller and roll out the muscles regularly , just copy this guy:

Not sure if you go to a gym or anything but using the cross trainer backwards os really good for making your hamstrings work rather than quads and calfs that running uses.
