Cutting Out When Rolling To A Stop

I thought I had solved all my probs. Over the last year I have renewed the HT leads, the battery, the alternator, the alternator fuse and finally the stepper motor.
The issue is that sometimes when I slow down and come to a stop the revs fall away and the engine cuts out. A turn of the key and it starts straight away and may not cut out at the next roundabout. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Have you cleaned the Stepper, if yes, have you checked Base Idle?

I cleaned it and then replaced it with new. I thought I had finally cracked it but as ever........

Mine does something along these lines.

One garage (Tower View) plugged the ECU into a diagnostic reader and it showed that the ECU wasn't getting a feed from the speedo sensor, even though my speedo was working.

Apparently the speedo goes through an amplifier/splitter (behind the dash) where one feed goes to the speedo and the other to the ECU.

Anyhow, according to the garage, because the amp isn't working properly the result is that the ECU always thinks the car is stationary!! This can apparently lead to stalling problems.

Haven't got mine fixed yet, sort of learnt to live with it, still a pain in the arse though!!

But could be worth you checking it out.

Also, another thing, when you clean the stepper motor, don't forget to give the hole that it sits in a bloody good deep clean too. And maybe wrap a bit of PTFE tape round the thread of the stepper to get a good seal.

Mine had the speed sensor problem - started again just fine every time as the stepper resets for idle during ignition/starting. New speed sensor thingy solved the problem - but it might be the wiring 'cos the sensor is supposed to drive the speedo and send signals to the ECU - if the speedo works ...

Some early rover boxed cars have speedo sensor off diff, and ecu signal off gearbox, nice low tech & easy to diagnose :-) Just in case your car is an early one.
